99' XPL 951 bogged and died

So I purchased a 99 XPL with the silver 951. A little backround first
-Switched to premix
-New plugs
-Fuel is a few months old 40:1
-other than that stock.
-After reading up I still have gray fuel lines


So I got it in the water started right up rode for a few minutes and bogged out once, let off the gas hit it again and I was not really concerned. Brought it back in and let my wife take it out she had it out for half an hour or so not sure how it ran she said ok but who knows. I got it and rode for 20 minutes or so bogged down 2 more times and started back to shore and it bogged again and this time died--cranked slow and would not start. towed in and home. Let sit for a few hours still would not start--pulled plugs and rear looked ok front was dry with metal specs all over it. I am assuming it is piston material. So I am going to tear it apart and have it machined and put new pistons in it but what I want to know is what could have caused this. Did it go lean? Maybe but why???? Carburetor clogged or???? Thanks in advance. :confused:
 
It is possible that it got leaned out from a clogged carburetor, but you'd notice a performance drop. Why did you go to premix? Did you have an issue in the past with the injector, that caused a lack of oil already and it just showed up now? I would tear it down and see what looks like. Keep us posted.

When I first got it I had planned to take it out and the night before I did a pre ride check and the hull was full of oil. The oil pump on the front cover had a broken fitting which someone had previously glued on so I suppose that it had ran without oil before, not sure. When I got it I had no idea what to check for so I don't know what the compression was, A little late now.


I will tear it apart tomorrow night. What should I look for when I get the carbs off? Torn gaskets,debris in the bowl?
If the carb to block gasket had a small leak that would cause it to go lean correct?
I had them off when I plugged the oil injection nipples and re-used the gaskets. :(
 
The carbs leaking air wouldn't necessarily cause the problem. It would just have a poor performance problem. Having the engine run out of oil is what happened more than likely. If the injector pump broke and allowed air in the oil lines, than that is what caused the problem before you got the seadoo. Pull off the heads, per the manual, and inspect the pistons, rings and cylinder walls for large deep gouges. It depends on how severe the damage is to tell if it can be repaired inexpensively or not. Keep us posted.

What I've found

So I pulled the head off last night. The dome on the front cylinder has a bunch of pitting in it, so something was bouncing around in there, same with the piston.

The head looks like it can be saved so I will reuse it. Punch out the bores and put some new pistons in it.


Could the timing being off have caused detonation and done this? :boxing_smiley:
 
First thing to do is figure out what caused the problem. If you just repair the damage and reassemble it, chances are it will do it again. Find the source of the problem.

I have a feeling that the mag carb was getting plugged and caused that hole to go lean. My plan is to:

-Punch out cans and replace pistons(both holes)
-replace all fuel lines (has gray)
-clean and rebuild carbs
-replace plugs again
Anything I am missing??

While I have the carbs off is there a way to flow test them or just visually check for restrictions?
I just can't imagine anything else causing this. Since I run premix if it was not getting fuel then it wasn't getting oil. Makes sense to me. :ack:
 
Timing

I forgot to ask about timing. It ran really good when it ran but someone suggested this to me. Is it something worth looking into? :confused:
 
The stator plate in the magneto sends the same timing to both coils. If one was off both would be off. I think that wouldn't be a problem. You can blow out both carbs, and use carb cleaner to clean them up. If your careful with the diaphragms you might not need to replace them, just don't tear them. I would finish them up with striping off the loose paint, prime them and shoot them with 2 light coats of black paint to keep corrosion away. let them sit till they are real dry or the paint will rub off. Keep us posted and if you get in a jam give us a shout.

Lower rod bearing is wasted!!!!! Got it all apart and the front hole lower rod bearing is gone. Looks like there was water in the bottom end. Not sure if it was that way when I got it or if it got water in there some other time. :rant:

Order your new motor from SBT, then, when it gets there, you have 10 days to remove everything from your motor and put it on the new one, then put it back in the crate and mail it back to them. It's really a great way to re-do your motor. You'll need a gear puller to remove the PTO magneto etc...a gasket set for the carbs, exhaust etc...
You can look at the SBT website and on the page for your motor, they show you a list of other things you'll need.
