hey guys--first thank you for welcoming to the site, finally joined but i have been watching and reading for a long time and this forum has been very helpful and saved me money in the past. anyway my current seadoo problem. my 99 spx will run strong all day and then after i shut it off it will seize. i can use locking pliers on driveshaft to break free and then it runs fine again for as long as i want until i shut it off again. checked oil pump and lines,it seems to be getting oil in the crank and is burning oil-smokes a little. can't figure it out anyone know why it would lock up when it cools down?

Hey Whitewolf, thanks for officially joining seadooforum.com.

Hmmm, might not even been engine related. If the pump/shaft bearings are seizing up, you could be seeing an effect where the "loose" driveline spins freely in continuous mode. But after it warms up and then it cools down after stopping, it binds up.

On the engine side, I'm wondering if you are getting some water leaking back into the engine somehow causing a mild hydrolock. But the other guys can chime in on this possibility better than I can.

Wait, I just thought of something! Check your engine mounts. Grab the top of the block with your hands and try to shake it around. Use a mirror to inspect the rubber and brackets.

The reason why is that when the mount goes, the motor goes out of alignment with the driveshaft. This could also cause a binding condition.

This youtube.com video does a great job of visualizing the importance of engine to shaft alignment.

Spx Seizing

I dont think it's hydrolocking because it will run fine all the way up to putting it back on the trailer, then by the time i get home about a half hour from the lake, when i try to start it--frozen. i didn't even think about the motor mounts though--thanks for the advice i will let you know

put the vise grips on the PTO instead of the driveshaft. do you feel the PTO move back and forth a tiny bit while still frozen? then it is definately the pump that is siezing. do same with driveshaft. can you feel it move a tiny bit while frozen? then it is motor. i doubt it is the motor. once they go bad, they STAY bad. best way to check, pull the pump.
