Hey all, I have a 99 GTS that keeps stripping the brass gear out on the rotary shaft. Two summers ago my gf sucked a rope into the pump and caused the engine to stall, after I got the rope cut out the engine would no longer start, after reading some posts on here I was told that could cause the rotary gear to strip so I pulled the engine and found just that. I purchased a brand new shaft assembly and installed it. The ski ran great for about 3 hours and died. It acted like it was out of time again, so I pulled the engine and popped the rotary cover off and found that the gear was stripped again. Am I missing something, the gear on the crank looks good I checked for endplay in the crank. Is there something else I can check? Thanks in advance....

possible the half birdcage that's installed in that area is misaligned, or maybe(even though you looked) the teeth on the crank gear, are rounded some, enough to not fit properly in the brass gear. How about play in the rotary shaft itself...

How would I check the rotary shaft end play? When I installed it, I pressed it in until it bottomed out. Is there anything external to the engine that could be causing this like the engine alignment or jet pump resistance.

usually they only blow when something gets into the rotary valve itself and makes the valve play guillotine. what does the front edge of the valve look like, and the rear (in direction of rotation) of the holes in case and RV cover look like? any rough edges? i don't think this had anything to do with sucking up a rope. you didn't suck it into the carbs.
