99 GTS 720 Blowing 15 amp fuse

Well I bought a basket case Gts and put it all together. Got it all back together put the dess key on and nothing, checked the fuses to find the 15 amp fuse blown. Put a new one in and it blows right away. Take the fuse out and the motor will start and run just fine.

Well I checked the stator(charging coil) and it tests out perfect, .5 ohm resistance indicating its not shorted to ground, and puts out 25-40 Vac when running, but the rectifier wasn't charging and tested bad.

Well I got a new rectifier today in the mail that I bought off ebay that was guaranteed working well I installed it and it immediately blew the 15 amp fuse again. I went through all of the checks in the manual again and the stator still tests good and the rectifier tests bad. No charging at the battery and no voltage when red and black are disconnected from mpem.

Did I just get another bad rectifier? If not what else could be the problem? Would a bad rectifier even cause this?

I need a solution asap as I am supposed to be taking this thing to powell soon. The stator tests perfect on the resistance to show it isn't shorted to ground and gives perfect vac readings.

The ski starts right up and runs great so that makes me think the mpem is fine.

There actually is 12.5 volts coming off the red wire on the mpem that connects to the Rectifier. Should it be that way? If not is that what is frying the rectifiers and does that mean the mpem is bad?

PLEASE HELP!!!

Thanks
Nick

Anyone? This is driving me crazy. I can't figure it out. I really don't want to just start buying things and throwing money at it, but I need to have this going asap.

Please help if you can

i 'd say, you got a short somewhere. Believe the 15amp IS for charging system. Check the connector pins on the mag housing and in the mpem box..

Rectifier/regulator...

IF the stator checks out good, then the only other component is the rectifier/regulator. The magneto on these things turn out AC voltage. The rectifier converts it to DC current and the regulator holds the charge steady at 14 to 14.5 volts DC...........

Yeah, ebay is not the place to shop for electronic parts. Before giving the guy a bad mark on his reputation though, I'd buy (BUY from a distributer, like above on the top right, where you see parts link) a "new" one. I can't figure out why people buy electronic parts off ebay where 99% of the time, they state "no returns" on electrical parts. But how many times is the purchase DOA?............

Get a new rectifier.

Yeah the guy guaranteed that it worked so I am going to email him.

Is there anything else I can do to check to make sure the stator is fine? I followed the checks in the manual and it was all within spec, had good resistance across the yellows and was putting out perfect AC voltage.

Everything else looks great, pulled the front cover and it looked new as well, no shavings or rust or anything.

Would a faulty rectifier cause a dead short like that?

Should there be 12 volts at the red wire coming off the mpem to the rectifier?

believe member, "glenwitt" did same thing with his boat. Checkedthe wires from stator, all passed the test...etc, was kick'n himself in head, until he pulled cover off mag only to find the "trigger" coil was hang'n inside the housing. The mount had broken.

scenerio

just mak'n a point, may ohm out, but be bad...i'd check the ground wire inside the mag assy. Yeah, a pain to get to, but at least, can rule it out.
