98 xp starter removal

Hoping someone can help a dumba$$ I'm trying to remove the starter. 2 bolts are out starter wiggles but seems to have the gears engaged and won't pull out. Manuel says I have to remove the fly wheel. Do I need to remove the engine or is there an easy way to pull it out? Thanks!

on the 1998 carb 951 engine you remove the air box, then starter bolts, and the starter pulls out.

you do not have to remove the flywheel. there would be no point.

pull the starter towards the rear of the ski. PULL hard. it will slide back.
