Finally got the engines started, but one is creating a lot of smoke. I just replaced one motor with an sbt, but the motor that was running fine made a lot of smoke when I finally started it. It's been sitting for about 6 months, could it just be oil burning from the motor sitting all this time?

Yea your good...no smoke I would be worried... Next time it sits put a clamp on the oil line to that motor see if that helps

To clarify the clamp suggestion.

The oil seal on the crank fails pretty often. This allows the oil tank to literally drain directly into the motor. In many cases, to the degree that the engine locks up. For long term storage many clamp the oil line.

I STRONGLY suggest that you put your key/lanyard on the clamp so you don't accidentally start the engine without removing the clamp.
Sorry if I am insulting your intelligence, just want to make sure you knew what the suggestion was all about.

I do recall my oil level dropping a lot while the boat was sitting, is it possible that the oil all went into the motor? and if so, do I need to worry? the engine started after turning over for about 10 seconds, but then the smoke was more than I would think is normal. The new SBT motor made no smoke at all, but it was the first time gas/oil had been run though it. I also want to add that this gas also has the Break In oil mixed with it.

The motor that's smoking is just burning off the oil that leaked past the seals. The best you can do is to run it hard on a lake for 10-15 minutes to burn it all off then clamp the oil line next time you store it. Some people have a bad leak that they clamp it even if it sits for a few days. Really nothing to worry about right now but every drop of oil it leaks you are just tossing $$$ away. Probably a rebuild in the near future will be necessary with a new crank.

sometimes it is better to start a thread that will contain all your questions. this way members can follow what`s been reply`d to and what is current...

I think I confused matters...

He had an old thread where he put some new questions and this newer thread with the same type of questions. I closed the newer thread and then I realized I did it backwards. I think he caught me while I was in the middle of correcting it and both threads were closed.

Its all good now...

I don't want to run it hard cause there's a new sbt engine in there too, and I don't want to travel too far from the launch ramp until I know all is well. Will it burn off the oil just sitting idle tied to the dock?

Update, took the boat out for the first real break in. pretty much filled the tank with gas at a marina gas station. Old motor still smoked bad, but it went down alot after about 30 minutes of driving around. The throttles were not even to achieve the same RPM's on the gauges, don't know if thats normal or not being ones the original motor and the other is a new sbt. Towards the end of the 2 hours on the water the older engine would die when I would put it in idle to dock the boat. It would turn, but wouldn't start unless I gave it some throttle. It would only stall when it was at idle.

What can I check regarding the motor that stalls at idle, and can the throttle's be adjusted?

Also, the rpm for the stalling motor died during the ride back, and the gas, speedo are both not working. any thoughts??
