98 Sportster 1800 DISCONTINUED FUEL PUMP

Been having issues with our fuel system. Opened up the fuel pump and found a couple of broken pieces inside (some plastic pieces). So we search around and try to find one and everywhere has told us (including the parts warehouse) that they're discontinued. Can anyone recommend a comparable aftermarket part? Cause right now, we've got nuthin'.

It's just a Mikuni pump. You can buy the parts at any Mikuni dealer.

AND... if you really can't find the pump parts... just replace it with a generic pulse pump, or a carb with the pump in the MAG body.

Thanks Doc. Racerxxx pm'd me and gave me the info on the pump from Mukuni. Only problem is that extra output. Guess we'll JB weld that shut and then stick a hose on it and clamp it (can't be too safe). Probably do that and go ahead and install an extra in-line filter right before the carbs (been having issues with gunk on them as well).

That's the problem Doc, you can't get shyt for these pumps it's all or nothing, and I confirmed that part# 270500390 is 100% discontinued. Thankfully the pumps for the 787 boats are available, the 720 is a different pump--I think the feed line is different and possibly 1/4" diameter not 5/16 like the 787 boats. I was curious if the discs were the same size as the standard carb pumps, perhaps I'll check that in a bit. You just need to be ultra careful cause they use a really stretchy rubber gasket that deforms quite quickly when you take the pump apart. I told him to use the mikuni pump that Pale Rider used which was the Mikuni DF62-702, you can get service parts for that one. It pumps 65 litres per hour, I'm just not sure if the smaller 31 LPH would be enough? I'm not a big fan of JB'ing a new pump or any pump but without a fuel pump a boat is no fun.

Just remember BWC2000, pay attention to what your doing and keep your head in the game. Fuel and sparks outside an engine don't mix well. Perhaps Pale Rider can point you to exactly how he did his, send him a PM.

Just PM'd him and asked that he RE to this thread. That way others with a similar problem can get some help with this as well. Thanks all!

That was my point.

BUT... you don't need that pump. As far as I know... it's just a regular SBN on the other side. So... grab a 52 lr/hr pulse pump, and bolt it on. AND... don't bother with the OE pump.

The manual say each eninge a full throttle uses 31.5L/h so a 35L/h pump to me would work. Switch to the built in pump would be nice. I really don't understand the external pump on the boats. Sure makes it easy to fix a bad pump that is the only plus side I can see unless it was some jacked up Coast Guard rule.

For a dual output pump, could we just run both outlets to a T-fitting to make it a single output without blocking one of the ports?

I would still run 2 pumps. The dual feed, is for 2 carbs. not 4 carbs on 2 engines. Just put a plug over the second feed.

PM replied to. I just used 2 part JB weld to block the outlet ( in my case, MAG carb fitting to PTO carb. The elbow that feeds the PTO carb, bc I ran both those dual outlets from the pumps, one to each carb. details should be in the build thread in my sig.

then used a 1/4 cap and zip for aesthetics...
