I have a 98 sportster 1800 how do I tell if the cooling water is circulating? Should there be a "tell tail" or pee stream? If so where should it exit the back of the boat? Where the trim molding meets or should meet there is a gap on the transom there's what looks to be rivets but previous owner has filled them with caulking, could this be where the water should exit?

Though I do not know where your "weep" hole is on the boat, I can tell you that it is not uncommon for no water to come out of it when the engine is running. It plugs quite often. This does NOT mean the cooling water isn't getting through the engine, it simply means it is not getting through the hose to the weep hole. When connected to a hose the water flows backwards and back flushes the engine. As such, the weep hole is fed differently and very often the weep hole works on the hose but not when the engine is running. Follow the weep hole hose to an elbow, this elbow is very often plugged. Remove the elbow, clear it, and the weep hole line will work again (in most cases).

Thanks coastiejoe. Yeah I have tried following the line but you almost have to be a contortionist to get back to it lol I know it connects on the upper portion of the transom near the tow hook but have not been able to find the exit hole. It's always kind of reassuring to be able to see the water flow if you know what I mean.

Cooling water is forced through the engine by the jet pump, the same pump that propels the boat. Here's the cooling system for a 787 yours is similar.
