I was sitting online looking at boat stuff before bed (what's new?) and it hit me...

My wife (and me too) always wish we had more (dry) storage on the boat. To keep her purse dry, extra towels, etc. Everything always gets stuffed into the rear hatch. So when you need something, just start digging thru the pile, etc. Its a mess.

SeaDoo placed storage areas in both of the port and starboard settees. They can be accessed by opening the windshield hatches and pulling the plastic bins out. I'd guess they each have 2 or 3 cubic feet of dry storage space. But, they are a pain to get to.

So...this may be my spring project. Why not cut an access hole in the side wall, just adjacent to the bow seat? And, place a hatch there (or, if i'm clever, make a hatch from the piece I cut out)

I posted a few pics to illustrate my thoughts...

I guess you can try that. but you may find that it goes down into the bilge.

How big is that cover plate?

I'm pretty sure it's a sealed off dry well in there. My boat is currently in storage so I have to wait to fully check it out. That hatch cover is 6 inches, but I'm now thinking about a square or rectangular one...cutting the hole will be much easier if its square. Again, need to get access to the boat before I can measure it all out.

my challenger had space under the seat, if I was keeping the boat I likely would have put the bottom of the seat on a hinge...

definitely go rectangular.. works great for coolers and such... .we have a deck boat in the family with a nice little rectangular door on the side near the steering wheel, and it holds quite a bit of crap, just dead space under there. but a 6" round hole would be pretty much useless if a woman is involved in the packing.. they bring so much crap !

I think that spot your pointing to runs to the bilge, but I could be wrong, I could have sworn when I was replacing the cupholders with new pieces that it looked like it ran all the way down.

I'm pretty sure the only sectioned off storage is the bow storage behind the bow seat back cushion where you would store your anchor, throwable PFD, rope etc.... Take your control levers off and look up that way, you'll see it's WFO. Also that is very curved right there, that flat hatch panel won't bend too well. These kind of projects make me cringe so please make sure you do your homework BEFORE you make a cut. Go buy a Roto-Zip to cut the glass. Square or round hold , it doesn't matter. My wife keeps a bag of towels at her feet, and leaves her purse at the house, my wallet is much smaller.

we carry a water tight tupperware thing for the credentials, wallet, and phone. The Port storage/ice bucket holds a small soft lunch box, and the Starboard storage holds the fire extinguisher, VHF handheld, water tight box and first aid kit.
The rear hatch storage hold a few towels, a floaty cushion and the vests when we are not wearing them.

The bow storage holds my anchor line, tow line, and a PADDLE. I usually toss the bumpers in the ski locker.

we also bring on a carry on bag with stuff and stuff for the dogs to...

in respect to the OP`s idea: mmm I wouldn`t cut any more holes in the hull...
on ours the PO did a job cutting in BASS speakers that were never used and I had to make up covers for that...
