My 98 speedster has had all kinds of issues this summer.

First the r/h engine would only go up to 4500 rpms. I put new plugs in it and it did 2 good laps around the lake full rpm. then it bogged out and died

I tried to restart it only to find out my starter was shot. Pulled the starter and found a broken brush lead and a ton of carbon. So I replaced it.
I also decided to clean my carbs

So I got it all back together and started it up.
Only to find out that there was a chunk of the crank case about 4x2 inches sitting under my engine as well as a bunch of smaller chunks.

Not sure if a crankcase seal went bad or if i threw a rod. My cylinder compressions were in the 160s. Im not sure if i should pull the engine and send it in or re-build the lower end.

I have rebuilt aircraft recip. engines before and worked on bombardier aircraft my whole career, but never rebuilt or even pulled out for that matter a rotax engine.

Any advice would be great. Thanks

2nd update. Engines out and some what taken apart. Heres a pic of the hole in the crank. Also had a piston go bad...425138_10150979718257795_972525853_n.jpg418721_10150979717887795_1124366600_n.jpg426855_10150978153582795_1431612289_n.jpg

I know how you feel. I'm in the middle of putting a Merc engine back together. Rod let go, and blew a big hole in the engine.

For you... it's not a big deal... SBT will take that as a core. For me... no one will take my Merc... and it's a $4500 engine.

as above... $1200, and you will be up and running again.

Wow. That ones pretty much done for. Im still thinking of just taking mine to work and throwing it on my roll-away box in the hanger and working on it when i have done time. We have a couple really good recip guys at the shop. I really want to get the boat fixed and sell it... I have my eye on an 05 speedster 200 that the guy keeps lowering the price on by me

The 200 is a nice boat. If you have a TIG at your shop... put the chunks back in the case, and get it runin'.

Yep. That's my project engine. Cant be scared of a little hole if you want to save big $$$ on a toy. Once it's done... I will be into the Islandia for about $7500. The going price right now on a 2002 is around $14k.

Here's what I spent the day doing today.

Doc,
Your right and your an inspiration. I've got my eye on two ski's for a project this winter if I can get them for the right price.
