I just registered to your forum in hope of some help. I just bought my son a 98 Seadoo SPX. The price was right but it had been flipped in fresh water. As recieved it wouldn't start. Found a blown 5 amp fuse in the mpem and was able to get it started. It blew again but this time I didn't have the correct fuse so I put in a 15 amp until I was able to get the correct one. I know, I'm an idiot. My son took it out once with no problems. Later that day, he started it and it stalled. Went to restart it and nothing, not even a click. When I plug in the lanyard, I do not get the 8 short beeps which I believe points to a mpem problem but I do get the 2 short beeps. Starter, starter relay and on/off switch seem to be fine. When I do the advanced self diagnostic check, I get 2 short beeps. I checked the connections between the lanyard switch and the mpem and I don't see anything suspicious. To me it appears to be a problem with the mpem. I hate to put out that kind of money without being sure. I've only owned this for a week so I'm just starting to learn about it. Any of you guys with more experience have any input. I would sure appreciate it. Thanks
John

Two short beeps

OK, I had almost the same problem with my 97 GTI when I bought it. In my case, I would not get any beeps when I placed the lanyard on the start post. I ran the self diagnostics test and also received the two short beeps. The book states that the two possible problems are there is a problem with the start post or the lanyard is bad. I performed the test on my start post and it was good. I then took the lanyard and used a sharp object and cleaned (scuffed up) the metal contacts in the cap. Doing this solved the problem. I received my two beeps when I paced the lanyard on the post and it tried to turn over. After replacing the battery, it started up with in a few tries.

If you need to test the start post, take a look through my previous post's and you should find the test procedure.

Hope this helps some

OK, I found your post about checking the lanyard post switch and performed the 4 tests. Seems to check out OK. I bought a brand new lanyard/key as I wanted a back up so I have to believe that is fine + the orignal has the same result. Seems to be pointing back to the mpem module but again, I hate to spend that kind of money without knowing for sure.

Mpem....

You may have damaged it. Maybe not beyond repair. There is only one cheap solution I see to this. Give Mike a call. He's a member here in the forum. He has a fix for mpems that blow their 5 amp fuse.

Go to the buy/sell/trade section of the forum and you'll see his ad in mpem repair. I just hope you didn't do terminal damage by using the 15 amp fuse.

Mike has made many fixes for members for a good price. Give him a call. Make sure you tell him what you did with the fuses so you don't waste your money or time. If he can't fix it, he usually doesn't charge.

Yes I did. One other bit of information that I forgot to mention, when I check voltage on the wire leads that go into the starter relay coil, I have 12 volts there when the start button is NOT depressed. When I push the start button, the voltage goes down to 0.5 volts. This seems to be the opposite of what I would expect. When I jumper the starter relay coil with 12 volts, the engine turns over so somewhere between the start button (which seems to check out OK), I losing my 12 volts.

In case my unit is non repairable, are WSM aftemarket mpem's decent? I can find them for $343 vs quite a bit more for the OEM. This stinks, my poor kid is dying to take this thing for a ride. :(

Sorry but if you are getting any beeps at all, this is not a repair I can do.

The repair I do is a direct short on the 5 amp fuse. this kills all power to the ski.

I would test your VTS first. Pull all VTS plugs and see what you have. I have seen VTS play havoc on MPEMS in the past and with you saying it sunk, chances are there is water in there or that the motor is shorted.
