I have tried to search the forum for this problem to get it solved but I have not been able to fix it using other post info...

Just bought a 98 spx with the 787 engine. Very clean, low hours, fresh water only... Does not start

I put the dess key onto the post and it does not make any beeps. I think the beeper is not working...
With the key on the post I press the start button and the solinoid clicks every time I press the button.
I jumped the solinoid posts and the engine turns over but does not start. pulled the plugs and there is no spark when I jump the solinoid.

I cleaned the ground wires in the coil, and the main ground wire, I checked the fuses which were good. No corrosion on the battery or anywhere else. No water in either of the electrical boxes. Fully charged battery.

Any ideas? I was thinking this is 2 problems... possibile bad starter solinoid and another problem for the no spark condition

Please help!!!

I checked the 5a and 15a fuses in the front elect box (front of the jetski)... is there a fuse in the rear electrical box where the coil and ignition switch/solinoid are?

Yes, there is a 15a (and a 7.5a) fuse in the rear electrical box on your machine.

ok i see the fuses, and the 7.5 was blown. I replaced it and still nothing, the solinoid just clicks when i push the start button.

I have a 95 xp800 ski that is in parts so I took the rear elect box out of it and tried it in the 98 spx. the soilnoid does not even click with this box. but like the other one if I jump the soilnoid the engine turns over fine (still no spark). I also swaped the beeper from the xp and now i can hear the correct 2 beeps when i put the dess key on the post.

If it helps, when I remove the dess and press the start button 5 times ( i think this is troubleshooting mode) i get 1 short beep and 1 long beep...

HELP!!!!!??

I just went out there and tried a couple of other things on the jetski,

I took off and cleaned all the connections on the origional rear elect box, made sure everything has good connection, then reinstalled it. I sanded all the grounds and tightly reinstalled. I rechecked all the fuses... and still wont crank, just clicks...

I tried to start it while testing the voltage at the red and yellow wire to the starter relay and this wire did not get 12v, after holding the start button for about 10 sec it slowly got up to 10mv and stopped there... So it seems like the mpem or whatever the red/yellow power wire goes to is not giving the 12v to trigger the starter relay...

Is this true, or does fact that the starter relay is clicking show that the relay is getting 12 volt trigger but the relay is defective? I get 12v on the batt side of the relay but dont get 12v on the starter side when pushing start button... just a click from the relay

If you jumped the solenoid and it turns over, it sounds like you have a bad solenoid.

From the manual, here is what it says about testing the solenoid.

Solenoid

NOTE:
Solenoid is located in the electrical box. Inspect connections and clean as necessary.

Static Test: Continuity

With a multimeter, check primary winding resistance. It should be approximately 5 ohms.

There should be no continuity between the positive posts of the solenoid.

Dynamic Test

Depress start/stop button and measure the voltage on the solenoid positive posts with a multimeter.

If there is no voltage and battery is in good condition, replace the solenoid.

Troubleshooting

Starter does not turn.
- Burnt 5 A fuse. Check wiring condition and replace fuse.
- Poor contact of battery terminal(s). Clean and tighten terminal(s).
- Poor battery ground cable connection. Clean and tighten.
- Weak battery. Recharge or replace battery.
- Poor contact of start/stop switch, safety lanyard switch or solenoid. Replace.
- Open circuit: start/stop switch or solenoid. Replace.
- Safety lanyard or MPEM. Refer to DIGITALLY ENCODED SECURITY SYSTEM 08-06.

Here is your wiring diagram if it helps.

ok, thanks for the manual info and wiring diagram..., in the earlier post I said that the red/yellow wire to the starter relay had no power, but after testing it again by actually pulling the plug and putting the voltmeter probe directaly on the open end of the wire, and pressing the start button, it does get power, 10v.... so it does now seem like its deffinitaly the soilnoid... i just swaped the solinoid with my other parts ski and it did not work, but that part looked worse than the original... i will order one and try it....

but even when i bypass the solinoid all togeather, the engine still has no spark

where should I look to for that?

If it helps, when I remove the dess and press the start button 5 times ( i think this is troubleshooting mode) i get 1 short beep and 1 long beep...

This is suppose to happen and signals that the machine is ready for diagnostic mode. How you proceed after hearing the 1 short, 1 long beep is to insert the safety lanyard and then press the start button again. If there is an error code to provide, you will hear it then.

To test for spark i pull the plugs, put them into the plug wire and set it on the head touching a head bolt, then crank engine by jumping solinoid,, with the dess key on post, and i get no spark... The plugs are brand new

After i hear the 1 short and 1 long beeps i put the key on and hit the start button which of course only clicks the solinoid, and no other b$eeps are heard, so i guess that means there are no problems the mpem knows of...

what should i check?

You need a new solenoid. Had the same problem on my 97 spx.

The solenoid just clicks as it is getting power but not transfering it to the starter hence when you bypass it, it turns over.

You wont get spark as you arent pressing the start button so the MPEM wont send power signal to coil.

wow really? I did not know that... It will be so sweet if it dosent have spark just because im not pressing the start button when I jump posts!

Yea when i was havn trouble wif mine i bypassed solenoid but wouldn't go. Pretty sure i pushed start buton at same time and it started.
Simple fix with a new solenoid

I just got the soilnoid because of the holidays, I installed it yesterday and yep it now cranks and has spark just like it should... YEAAA!
Now I have to go through the entire fuel system because it sat for 7 years and has the old grey gunked up lines everywhere... NOT YEAA!

Oh well, I got a while till its warm enough to ride anyways...
