So I have a 98 speedster and notice that my bilge pump only runs when I turn the switch on. I thought I had read some place that this pump should run in auto also if you get water in your boat. Is this correct? If so how does this work if the switch on the dash is only an on/off switch?

Originally it was auto. But since it's a 20 year old boat, and probably changed hands a few times... I'm guessing it's been changed a few times.

OK did this boat come with an external float for the auto system or was it built into the bilge pump? Just want to know what I should be looking for.

I also read that the location of the discharge hose for the pump is in a poor location just under the swim platform. Sounds like water can come back into the boat from the discharge hose. Should I be looking at adding a one way valve to the hose?

in '98... it should have still had the external water switch. It wasn't a "Float" type though. It was a small gray/brown box on an aluminum angle bracket. When the contacts got wet... it would click on. BUT... there is a high probability that was removed too. THey changed to the Rule Auto pumps (built in switch) late 99 to 2000. (My islandia had the new pump)

As far as location... it's fine. Some people don't like it because they can't see it. But as far as water coming back in... that's not really an issue. The hose is supposed to be lifted above the water line. THat will keep the water out.

So I tested the pump last night and yes it does have a auto function and does work. The hose looks a little short so I think I will replace it with a longer one so I can get it higher up to keep water from coming into the boat.
