98 GTX power fluctuation

i've got a 98 gtx with the 787 engine in it. the ski idles fine and takes off good. when i get up to approx. 6200 rpm it cuts back to approx. 4000 rpm. it'll go back up to 6200 and kick back, it will do this continuously, up and down. is this a rev limiter kicking in or a safety mode feature? what do i need to check out. thanks

Check your filters, I had the same problem and found the bowl filter full of mudd and scale and when I pulled the filiter in the carb it was full of trash too. I replaced the fuel lines and installed an inline filter between the bowl filter and the carb and its back to normal.
 
I've got the same issue on my 97 GSX all of a sudden, I'm hoping it is just like Charles said where it is junk in the line, but I'm not sure. Mine will run fine for 20 minutes or so and then start to have the issues, I was thinking overheating seen as the engine seems pretty warm.

I'll have to check the fuel filters, hopefully that's all it is. My ski's still have the old gray lines, so I'll replace those and get some carb kits in them.
 
also, while in there, pull hoses off pipes/anywhere water travels, and try to clean out/blow air in those spigots...
 
I took my 97 SPX out this am and had a similar issue. I emptied the whole gas tank. Replaced plugs and pump oil. Ran fine on the hose, but in the water rand fine at about 1/3 throttle, and bogged down to less than 1/3 throttle but didn't sputter or die. I'm thinking it's a carburetor issue. Seems like not getting enough fuel. I don't think it's a rev limiter as it revs higher out of water on the hoes. It has this issue under a load. Any suggestions??
 
i'm in the process of replacing all fuel lines and installing carb kits. i'll be sure to let you all know what happens. thank for the input
 
Sounds like lots of carburetor problems...If I had a nickel for every gray hose problem out there I'd ....well you know.

It sounds like you need to remove the carburetors and clean them. If you're careful and don't tear or damage the diaphragms you won't need to buy a rebuild kit. Pay attention to the internal filters too. If you have gray fuel lines you need to replace them with black fuel lines available from auto parts stores like Auto Zone. Measure the length you need and bring a sample with you so you get the correct size. Replace one at a time so you don’t get them mixed up. If you need clamps replace them too. Use small stainless steel clamps also from the auto parts store.

Do you have a seadoo shop manual? if not here's an idea. You could join as a "premium member". As a premium member you can down load a authentic seadoo manual from the seadoo manual library. In the library is a variety of manuals for almost all years and models. You can view as many as you like on line as a PDF file, or download it and print it for your personal and private use. There are operator manuals and repair manuals for you to do your own repairs on your seadoo. The repair manuals have everything from troubleshooting, repair procedures to winterizing. It contains wire diagrams torque specs and pictures for disassemble and assemble instructions. In the spec sheets it tells everything needed to maintain oil changes, spark plug gaps, carburetor rebuilds and impeller wear ring tolerances. the solution

thanks for the pointers, i replaced the gray hoses as requested...they fall apart inside eventually. I also found the real issue, the little carb filters were plugged, i installed rebuild kits while i was there because i was there. thanks for all the help.
