98 GTX Ltd starter problems.

Went to start my ski and all I heard was the starter spinning. At the time I thought it was just the starter going bad so I replaced it but now with the new starter it’s doing the same thing. Is there a way to check my bendix without actually taking it out?

Check the battery voltage when at rest and cranking. If the battery gets low enough it can spin the starter but not engage the bendix.

At least 12.5 at rest and should not drop below 12 when cranking.

I put a brand new battery just to test and it showed 12.4 at rest and dropped down to 11.7 when cranking. I really have no idea what direction to go

Also all teeth on the bendix feel fine and I don’t see any metal shavings. Is it supposed to be able to spin it freely both ways with my hand

I charged the old battery before trying it but I didn’t charge the new one.

well i guess its time to pull the starter and bench test it

The starter works perfectly, it’s brand new. It has to be something with the bendix.

The bendix is separate from the starter on the 951
