98 GTX limited, no start

Hey all, brand new member here

I recently got a 98 GTX limited with an SBT rebuilt engine that wasn't installed. Carbs were fully put together so I just bolted them on as they were.
I have everything installed now but having trouble getting it started. It will crank over just fine, starts for a split second with starting fluid, there's spark and compression is about 130 on each cylinder. No fuel in the supply line when I take it off, I was able to easily drain the old fuel out of the tank using a transfer pump and the supply line so it's not blocked. I think I may have mixed up the fuel supply/return and possibly the vacuum hose that goes to the carb. I did look at the diagrams for the fuel system but having some trouble knowing for sure where everything goes.
Anyone have a good photo or some advice as to what goes where on the carbs? It's the 951 2 stroke

Thanks!

Figured that part out
I had not connected the correct pulse line from the engine to the carb, that’s connected now and it starts.
I did however have another pulse line that was connected ther
Now I have no idea where that goes :)
I’ll post pics shortly after I figure out where the other end is

My apologies if I’m using incorrect terms, I’m an engineer not a mechanic. :)
Anyway, the hose I had on the pulse line to the carbs runs to the RAVE solenoid. There’s a small filter on the open end and like 1” of hose after the filter. I know the lines to the rave valves on top are missing, will be replacing them today.

I also have a cooling elbow at the bottom of the engine that looks like it’s supposed to go somewhere near the plate on the rear where the pump/steering is and I can’t find an outlet for that. IMG_6056.jpeg
And finally one more line that goes from the pisser on the port side into the hull toward the back. Once those are all on should be done. I just can’t find where they go

The line that’s coming out the port side and heading towards the back, is your battery located at the back. Port side? Could be a vent hose for old acid batteries?
What size of hose roughly is the one at the bottom of the engine going to rear around pump area? Is it small like the size of windshield washer hose? Does it attach somewhere to the engine? I don’t have the same machine, and don’t know for sure but I’m wondering if it goes to the fitting at the rear where that little metal loop for towing is, that’s your pisser to let you know water is circulating ok, without looking at my GSXRfi I think that may go in the exhaust somewhere. Could be referred to as a engine drain hose as well.

Hey
As for the battery, yes it’s in the back, port side. That hose fits right to where the battery is located so you’re probably correct there

As for the rager one on the bottom of the engine, that’s a 15/32 ID hose. The diagrams I can find just show it going to that rear plate there

Oh, that’s a 1/2” hose then, important one. I’m not sure but that’s a 787 RFI correct? I can have a look at my 99 787 RFI, may be the same

It’s the 951
Here’s the diagram I found, I followed that hose in yellow.

The black hose with the inline check valve goes under the carb to a brass fitting next to the pulse line attachement. It runs around the engine and plugs into the forward nipple of the Rave valve solenoid with the 3 black hoses. The center black nipple of the Rave valve solenoid connects to the Y hose coming from the Rave valves.

I am assuming your have the parts manual? If not they are free online ,if you cant find it I may be able to post it for you, I have the same ski. Once you get it just look at the pics in the manual and you should be able to find everything. If not send us pics with whatever ends is connected to whatever, showing just a hose can be hard to decipher.
The pic with the back box that is missing a hose is your raves ....valve, I attached a pic of how it goes.
The pic with the hose going to the hull does look like the battery outgas hose, they are not necessary anymore but leave the valve in place, it is a check valve .
The pic with the tube in your hand, not sure but it may be the other end of the battery outgas hose, if not sends us a picture of the other end.
I cant tell what you are asking on the other ones.

Hi Grim, SimpleArkansan
I figured out the engine drain hose, it was already attached to the outlet near the exhaust and was stuck under the engine so I didn't see the other end of it
Also got the RAVE valves hooked up as per the diagram. Only thing left at this point (I think) is one coolant fitting that I've ordered and should be here Thursday
I started the engine for about 2 seconds today and it fired right up, so fingers crossed!

Awesome, thank you
I found the other end and got that hooked up. Thanks!!!

If I were you would go over the parts manual and look for any connection on that engine to make sure all the hoses are connected. There are quite a few, some hard to see. I would also hook up the water hose and run it, that will help you if you have any disconnected hoses on your water supply. Just remember to always start engine first, run water, cut off water, then cut off engine, otherwise the engine will flood with water! good luck.

Feels like I've gone over that manual 100,000 times by now lol
Good thing is I can't find any other hoses, barbs, missing fittings etc now. Just waiting on the fitting for the top 1/2" hose. I'll probably take it to the river and run it on the trailer in the water t make sure everything is good
I did notice this morning that the flame arrester support bracket and plate isn't there, so going to have to order those now 🤷‍♂️

I got it started in the water today. It ran for a few seconds then cut out.
I noticed an exhaust leak between the exhaust manifold and the head pipe that I think is contributing to it not continuing to run. It's a nasty leak, the gasket is installed and the bolts are torqued down to the spec in the manual.
Has anyone else experienced that issue? I'm probably going to have to get some of that create a gasket goop or take it to a machine shop to have the mating surfaces cleaned up

Gasket is probably bad they will leak a good bit when there bad. It’s probably letting smoke out causing it not to run but I would make sure it still run out of the water to be sure that something crazy didn’t happen

Hey, gasket is brand new, I suppose they could still be bad though.
Runs fine out of the water with the seats off but I can see tons of smoke coming out right at that spot. Someone used gasket maker at some point, I can see the orange gunk still on there. I wonder now if the last owner that had it running had the same problem and just sealed it up with that stuff

The aluminum can corrode and not seal. A fine file on both surfaces will reveal low spots. If this is the case it will not seal.
If it is very minor a little ThreeBond 1211 might get you by.
