I rebuilt the carbs on my 98 GTX limited and fired it up and it went to 6-7k rpm instantly. I'm new to the PWC world but have a lot auto mechanic experience. Is this a simple error on my part or is there more going on here. The throttle plates are in the closed position when starting but it still goes wide open. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Air leak....?

You have an air leak between the bottom of your carb and the engine......if you didn't have this problem before you re-did the carbs, then it's in your gaskets that you put on.

The idea is when you run like that, the air is mixing with just enough fuel to run the engine really lean. When this happens, you should pull the choke and it will cool off the pistons with cool fuel and shut the engine down....If left un-checked, it will run away causing major engine damage..........

you may not have an airleak, it may be as simple as your idle is set too high or your throttle linkage is not set with enough play. that 951 motor is very sensitive under no load so much that it will go into a runaway situation, pull the choke to kill the motor if it happens again, this is the only way to kill it, start button or lanyard will do nothing.

whenever rebuilding carbs, back the idle screw off, align the oil injection marks, set throttle linkage with slight play in the thumb throttle then only slightly engage the idle screw.

it can also go into a runaway situation on the trailer is you rasp the throttle too much.

Got it fixed, Thanks

Well, I took the carbs back off, checked the gaskets, applied some "blue goo" and put it back together. Let it set up and it works great. Must have been an air leak. Thanks for the help.
