Just got this ski last week and it ran great for a couple hours, I did flip it but with in a few seconds had it up righted per instructions on rear of the boat, after a few moments of cranking, it started and ran great for about another hour, then it just went dead, after towing ashore, found the 15 amp fuse by the starter relay bad and replaced, bumped the starter and it worked, I did not start the engine, just turned it over for a second or 2 and thought it was fixed. Went back to the lake today and as soon as I start cranking it, the 15 amp fuse blows, I did install a larger fuse and tried it again and this time it did not blow but the 15 amp under the front cowling did, replaced both fuses with the correct size and still blows the 15 amp fuse as it cranks over. A little long winded I know but wanted to include as much information as I could, any help would be appreciated.

Blown Fuse

Try unplugging your gauges ( you may have to remove the black plastic cover on the under side of your hood to gain connector acess).
If that doesn't help then try unplugging your rectifier. It's the small square box bolted to the MPEM in the front left of the ski.

blown fuse

Hey Man, thanks a lot, I unpluged the rectifier and it starts and runs perfectly, suppose I should replace it.

rectifier

Yea replace it. They had problems with them. I mentioned the gauges because I thought you might have gotten water in them when the ski was "less then upright"!!!!!

fuses again

Just curious, I noticed in the fuse center under the cowling, 3 fuses labeled spr( I am assuming these are spare)1,2& 3- with a 30, 15, and 5 amp fuse installed there, I have located 2-15 amp fuses and the 5 amp fuse , but have yet to locate the 30 amp fuse that is used in the ski, any ideas?

thanks so much for the help, as you can see I am new to the sea doo and this forum looks like it will be very helpful.

Fuses

There is no 30 amp fuse on your ski. I'd remove that fuse and put a 15 amp fuse as a spare.

I don't mean to hijack this thread but I think I to have finally figured out I have a bad rectifier. Mine is only cutting out or breaking up higher in the rpms and makes the ski bog around 4500. Am I right by saying if I pull the 15amp fuse on a 96 gtx that disables the rectifier. Ski runs perfect then. My only real question is how long can I drive the ski without a rectifier. I have a fully charged brand new battery and cannot locate a new rectifier for this weekend and this is the last weekend I will be able to ride all summer. thanks

bad rectifier

Little curious about that myself, would love to ride this weekend but can't get a new one till next week, Is it just a matter of the battery not charging?

thanks again,

Hmm, well I go to grad school across from the lake so I can pull it out Saturday after riding and charge the battery for Sunday.

OR.. run a really long extension cord across the road and down my neighbors yard to the water. :)

bad rectifier

I'm glad to see this advice has helped you guys with your problem. There have been many carbs o/hauled needlessly because of this rectifier issue. It took me 6 trips to the water( after going thru the fuel system!!!!) in order to figure out that the problem was not the fuel system but engine management.
I would leave the fuse installed and just disconnect the rectifier. ROBIN is correct..... the ski will run until until the battery goes dead.
WARNING: NOT A GOOD THING TO DO!!!!
If you want to use the ski for a little bit....OK
Trying to start a ski with a battery that does not have a full charge can have a bad effect on electrical componets (starter, etc).
USE COMMON SENSE AND DON"T PUSH YOUR LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hope you get your parts soon,

Good point well taken

Is there a difference between removing the fuse and disconnecting the rectifier itself? Asking only because I removed the fuse and if the fuse cuts off power to other electrical components then I really haven't diagnosed it as the rectifier afterall

Either way I convinced a buddy back home 5 hours from here to pull the rectifier from his 97 gtx and send it up with my gf tomorrow so that I can atleast try a different one/run it this weekend.

fuse

That does bring up a question. Where is the 15 amp fuse that you are removing located? Front electrical box or rear?
DAWG

Located in the front electrical box in a 96 gtx. I believe its only a 5 amp and a 15amp beside each other. If I run it with the fuse out it runs perfect. All gauges work except when I first start it flashes 12volt low and the battery was fully charged. As soon as I put the fuse back in I can hear a drop in rpms and the bogging comes back with the throttle at 3-4500.

Fuse

It's OK to remove the fuse in the front box and not disconnect the rectifier. If you were to remove the 15 amp fuse in rear electrical box and the ski still started then someone has done some "creative wiring" and that would have to be looked into.

Okay great, this is the first day of real sun I think we have had in two weeks here in NY so I'm gonna take it out for a bit and see how I make out. Thanks again for all your help.
