I've got a '98 GTI that doesn't start. It beeps twice when I put the laynard in but the starter doesn't kick in; no clicking, not a sound.

I had this running back in April when I was flushing it after using it in Florida. It's been on the trailer in the garage since.

Thanks.

2 beeps- no click. possible start-stop switch. possible MPEM. most likely solenoid. jump solenoid and see if it cranks. if so, put key on and jump sol. it should run.

hey...first, inspect theres nuth'n obstuct'n the pump assy underneath, if ok, then remove the spark plugs and grey shield from back of motor, and turn the PTO counterclockwise, should turn smooth, if all ok, follow plug wires into a box, you'll see a relay that has 2 post, (where 2 red cables attach to), jump those post,..heavy gauge wire, screwdriver, and see if it kicks over, BTW, put plug wires on ground post. If she kicks over, than you'll need new starter relay...good luck

I took the sheild off and the plugs out. The fly wheel turns freely - no problem.

I'm not sure were the solinoid is. I can follow the positive lead to the starter; there's a red boot over the bolt (I can barely see this). I can see or feel another connection at the starter. The block is grounded back to the battery.

So, I can't see where I would jump over the solinoid to test the starter.

Red cable from the battery goes to a black box with three more cables, two going to the spark plugs and the third running to the starter (I did say ealier that the red cable went to the starter but I was wrong, it goes to this black box and a black cable goes from the black box to the starter).

Still not sure where the solinod is...

Yes...inside that box, you'll see where the red cables attach to, thats your solenoid..after reread'n your last post, there should be a red cable goin from black box to starter. The black cable should be from coil to battery..?

Ok, found it...

I put the laynard in, go 2 beeps, nothing on with the starter button, so I shorted the two leads on the solinod with a screw driver and the starter started cranking.

So, I assume that the solinod needs to be replaced and I'd be ready to rock-n-roll, right?

Thanks for your late night help on this....
