I might be looking for an MPEM if I find that this is the root of my
electrical problems. SO I realize I must determine
first that the post and lanyard are ok. Can anyone
tell me what years / models have the same MPEM ?

I would start by cleaning the Post on the safety lanyard. It is beeping and saying it isn't connecting to the Mpem, (Multi Purpose Electronic Module) It needs to beep 2 times to let you know it is ready to start. Clean the post and cap with soapy water. Don't use any grease of lubricant on it as it needs a clean connection to make contact. Connect the lanyard to see if it is making a connection. 2 beeps and it's ready to fire up. Some times the beeper is bad.

I hope this helps to see it it is the dess first.

Ok so here is the latest.

I did clean the post and lanyard and nothing.
I did the post test and tested the start switch and everything
checked out with the ohm meter so basically from what I have
read its gotta be the MPEM ? I have juice I can crank
the starter over by bypassing and going straight to the solenoid to
crank it over. Any more info on testing the MPEM or can it
be sent in for another check ?

The mpem receives its current from the battery. Its functions include the rev limiter, an integrated delay timer, which cuts off the power after 33 seconds of non use when the lanyard cap has been installed. It interprets and distributes information to the control features of the engine.

One more thing. You’ve not described any beeps from your DESS (digital electronic security system) lanyard when placing on your post. With a good battery, when you put the lanyard cap on your post, you should hear 2 short beeps. This means all is well and the engine is ready to start. If you don’t hear any beeps, then you may have a DESS problem. This lanyard cap has a ROM chip in it which is essentially an encrypted key for your specific PWC. This protects it from theft. If the mpem is bad, when placing the cap on the post, you should hear 8 short beeps. If you’re the original owner, then do you remember the beeps when it ran?
You can jump across the solenoid and turn the engine over all day long, but the mpem will keep it from starting if your lanyard cap or post is bad.
With the battery fully charged and you put on the lanyard cap, do you hear anything?.........if not, then this is really where we should be starting from. But the test parameters for the mpem are to follow, so go ahead and check it too.

Here is a list of results you should get from testing your mpem on the 717cc rotax. Make sure you have all the wires completely disconnected or damage to your meter can occur.

METER + ...........................METER - ................................Value

RED........................................RED.... ....................................< 1 OHM
(ring terminal)......................(female terminal)

RED....................................RED/PURPLE.................................< 1 OHM
(ring terminal)......................(female terminal)

RED.......................................BLACK... ...................................> 20K OHM
(ring terminal)......................(ring terminal)

BLACK/RED..............................BLACK............ .........................> 10K OHM
........................................(ring terminal)

WHITE/GREY............................BLACK............. ....................... >100K OHM
........................................(ring terminal)

TAN/BLACK..............................BLACK.......... ...........................>200K OHM
........................................(ring terminal)

YELLOW/RED............................BLACK.............. .......................> 10K OHM
(female terminal)..................(ring terminal)

YELLOW/RED............................BLACK.............. .......................> 50K OHM
(male terminal).....................(ring terminal)

BLACK.....................................RED..... ...................................> 10K OHM
(ring terminal).......................(ring terminal)

I hope this test helps you out...

oh yeah as for the beeps I got nothing at all. Prior to this ordeal it
beeped normally two beeps and I was ready to go. My battery
is fully charged. i also check the post with the lanyard attatched
and took some readings and it checked out ok i did by probing black and black/yellow wires at it came out as "0" as it should be.
So the Mpem.....
I dont understand:
METER + ...........................METER - ................................Value

RED........................................RED.... ....................................< 1 OHM
(ring terminal)......................(female terminal)

what do you mean by ring terminal vs. femal terminal, looking directly
at my MPEM and the Mpem diagram in book, I have two connectors
and both are male recepticals which are on the MPEP itself , with my wiring harness being the female end. What am I not getting ?

do an eBay search for mpem repair. you will get allthingscustom's ad. he is the world's foremost authority on seadoo mpems. the term World's Foremost Authority is usually used sarcastically. here it means exactly what it says. you will get it repaired with a guarantee (and a guarantee that you won't need the guarantee) or you will get it back no charge with either a clean bill of health cause it ain't dead or with a condolence card because it is beyond repair.

thanks for the input and information. I have actually found that guy
on ebay and will send my unit out once I can determine it is hosed so
thank you its a fair price and comes with a guarantee which is sweet.

but I repeat:

RED........................................RED.... ....................................< 1 OHM
(ring terminal)......................(female terminal)

what do you mean by ring terminal vs. femal terminal, looking directly
at my MPEM and the Mpem diagram in book, I have two connectors
and both are male recepticals which are on the MPEP itself , with my wiring harness being the female end. What am I not getting ? should I be testing
the harness side to the actual recepticle on the MPem ?

thanks Karl

I take a reading. But I have only one red wire not 2. see the image I have
added.

thanks, PL

I'll look deeper into the test to see if the colors on your exact model are slightly different.

Karl

Thanks a bunch Karl. As I've been scratching my head on it. In the
meantime I'll pull the manual and cross reference the redwire to the acutal
male pins either socket 1 or 2 should have it and I can take the reading
if I understand this correctly I should get 2 ohms.

thanks, PL

So does anyone know how to test the 97 mpem. From what I
can tell the mpem is special the the 97 year gsi. Do any other
models use this mpem. I'm in a tight spot and need to repair it
and will send it in to get tested but would like to check it myself
for a piece of mind.

ok guys I've exhausted my resources trying to figure out whats
wrong with my doo. So I have sent in my Mpem for repairs
and hopefully this is the root of my electrical problems. I hope
to find out in a couple of days at which point i will report back
with my findings which may help others.

thanks for all the feedback / help

alright guys. Too my dissapointment after having sent my MPem for repair
and apparently it was fixed I still have no power on my instruments
and no beeping when I install the key. My battery is charged and I
checked the power at the battery and turned over my starter via
the solenoid. I've checked my fuses and they are good. If not my
mpem then what ? I've checked with an ohm meter my dess
and my start/stop switch and they too check out, now I'm stumped.
what next ?

alright, stud....this happened to me,....is all the red wires thats in the MPEM box, hooked to the solenoid post, that has the cable from the battery, and not the cable to the starter....

my solenoid stuff should be fine I haven touched it. I know my wires
that run from my battery to the solenoid and then off to the starter
I checked the fuse their too and it checks out too. I didnt mess
with this stuff but checked the starter via the solenoid to see
if it would kick over and it did. Or do I not understand you
question ?

also my mpem on my 97 gsi from what i have read and compared
to others a fairly unique to this particular model / year, FYI

a dude earlier this month, had similar situation, did the checking of volts,watts..etc on post, ended up buying new one with landyard, got it programmed to ski, and WHAM,..off and riding. Say this, cause his findings to checking everything came up good, but, something was wrong...

the lanyard...hmmm I checked everything
today and it all checked out except the electrical test with an ohm
meeter regarding black and yellow wires for the dess, I got .4 ohms it says
its supposed to be zero ohms and when I hit the start buttom 5 times
i still get no beeps, absoultely nothing. I do recall reading that the mpem can be wiped of memory as I just sent it in for repairs and got it back but
even so i think with the 5 x start button method i should hear something.
I'l take the readings again just to be sure.

alright guys i checked the dess per the described method in the book
and it checks out fine but I still dont have power, no beeps. What
else could it be, does this test ensure the dess is still not bad ?
I have also checked the MPEM and I'm reading 12v at mpem itself.
If my lanyard is bad I should still be able to get into diagnostic mode
by hitting the start button 5x but that doesnt work either. I'm
going to clean up the electronics box towards the rear of the boat
where the solenoid / coil are I measure 12v power here as well...
my fuses are also good here and in the mpem ? What am I missing ???

also..if magneto is bad will i still have power on my gauges ?
I would think so....

ok guys thanks for all the help. I found a bad ground and it solved
my issues. Onto the next problemo.

thanks everyone for all the help and insight.
