'97 XP stalls

Hi Guys,

I have recently purchased a 97 XP. Rebuild 4 hrs ago. Told the valves with the red caps at the top are new but one seems to have melted the plastic cap. I have screwed the cap back in and the ski runs great when under power. Problem is that the engine seems to want to stall when no throttle applied and takes a couple of pumps on the throttle to keep running. I am pre mixing fuel as it has been converted to run a sump style oil tank where the original oil tank is. Should these things idle with no throttle then pull cleanly? or am I expecting too much? Any ideas on a fix?

Welcome to the forum Adam.
You say you just rebuilt the engine or you bought it rebuilt? I hope you or whoever had it before you broke it in properly it could lead to some serious problems.

It all is good with the break in start by replacing the "O" rings to both of the RAVE valves. These can leak causing hot exhaust to seep through and melt those caps. I would replace both RAVE valves or get a rebuild kit.

If your idle is off, that is to be set with the idle speed screw on the carbs. The engine should idle 3000 RPMS out of the water and 1500 in the water.

Oil tank?

I see you've converted to pre-mix but I don't understand what your saying about the oil tank "sump type". Is the oil tank still connected suppling oil to the rotary valve? What is your premix right now. With the motor only 4 hours old, you probably should be running at least a 32:1 ratio.

Break in procedures as nswillin mentions need to be strictly followed.

Thanks Guys,

I have been running 40:1 mix. You are right the sump oils the rotary valve. How long for and how should I run it in? I have been told it is okay to use valvline 2 stroke oil. Cool or not? So far I have only used the genuine stuff.

Your advice is appreciated
