97 XP fouling plugs

Ok, I have a 97 XP with the 787 motor. It seemed to be oil fouling the plugs rather quickly. My thoughts were that if the oil injection were oiling properly & the carbs were dirty & not feeding enough fuel, the mixture would be wrong, thus fouling the plugs. On that note, we took the carbs off, cleaned the in-line & internal filters. Cleaned everything we could disassemble on both carbs. Replaced the grey fuel lines. Put everything back together & it ran worse, even with new plugs. Ok maybe the the carbs aren't adjusted right... Spent all day adjusting & testing, adjusting & testing... Bam, it seems like we got it... So we go for a longer test ride, things seem about perfect for the 1st 30 mins or so. It gradually gets worse as we continue. Eventually, it's back to it's old self with top end hesitation, that can sometimes be overcome by getting the pump to suck air (porpoising or jumping waves), at which time it feels as if someone hit a nitrous button. We go back to the ramp & check the plugs... Go figure, they're coated in oil again & they've only been run for about an hour... Is there any way that the oil injection pump could be feeding too much oil?

Thanks for your time & advice,
Landon.

It could be either the marks on the oil injection pump are off, or the seals in Rotary Valve Chamber are shot. What happens is the the rotary chamber gets it lube from the oil in the oil injector tank. If the seals go bad it seeps oil into the cylinders on either side and causes to burn the extra oil resulting in excessive oil fouled spark plugs. To see if this is the problem...let is sit for a couple days and pull the spark plugs out. If when you turn it over,(with the plug caps on the grounding posts) it spurts out oil ...the seals are bad. You need to either to rebuild the Crank, and replace the bad seals or replace the engine.

marks on injection pump...

We're told the engine was replaced & should have less than 50 hrs on it, so I'm hoping the problem is related to the oil injection pump! What marks are you talking about on the pump? How do I properly adjust this?

Thanks Again!!!

You might need a mirror, where the cable is going to the pump, you should see a small mark on the cable "disk"...where the cable attaches to, it aligns to a small mark on the pump. It should be in sync with the carbs cable movment.
I hope thats the problem.

Thanks Karl

I'll check it out 1st thing tomorrow! Btw, am I correct in thinking this adjustment is made on the carb end of the oil injection cable?

I could be wrong but I would not think that the oil injection could foul the plugs in that amout of time even if it were off as bad as it possibly could be.

Ok, I checked the marks on the oil pump. They look good. I also let it sit for 2 days, pulled the plugs & turned it over, as advised. Little to nothing, aside from air, came out!

After reading a few threads, I decided to check the charging system. It's reading 12.5. This is a sign of a possible bad rectifier right?

Go buy the correct plugs run it till they foul then post photos of your plugs so we can know for sure that it is oil foul and not wrong plugs or gas foul.
