97 SPX trim blows fuses, could it damage the MPEM?

I took my 97 SPX to a new mechanic for some preseason work including a new wear ring. I cranked it before I trailered it roughly 100 miles to his shop. When I cranked it the trim worked fine. When he serviced it he said he had to disconnect the trim because it had blown a couple of the fuses. I think he said it blew a fuse inside the MPEM case as well as one other. He said when he replaced the fuses it would immediately blow the new fuse so he just disconnected it. He said I could reconnect it and put new fuses in it but it would likely blow them again and I risk burning up the MPEM.

His analysis was that the resin coating on the trim control module on the back of the trim motor assembly expands and contracts and eventually cracks allowing moisture in and corroding the controller. I'm trying to make sure he's no attempting to con me into paying him for replacing the trim motor or controller assembly.

So my question is is there any risk in replacing the fuses and reconnecting the trim just to see what happens? If I end up burning up a good MPEM I'm going to feel like an idiot.

Any advice?

mechanic you can vount on..

those dont come around, it seems like these days.

He's right, about the "seal" allow'n water/moisture eventually gets in, so, either fix it, so you have the trim work'n, or just leave it disconnected in the "nuetral" position..

f you replace the fuses with the proper size to test if he was telling you the truth you wont harm anything. Just be sure not to put a larger than recommended fuse in the slot!!!!
