I am working on a 97 spx and the starter is pulsing. In other words if you hold the starter button down it will turn over for a few seconds, then stop, then turn over again for a few seconds. I thought it was a bad starter at first tested starter and it works fine...then i thought it might be a bad solinoid so i tried a brand new one and a used one i have in shop..still not it...switchs are good and the starter drive is good...and its deffinitly not the crank partially siezing b/c i just put a brand new hot rod crank in it along with new wsm pistons....I am thinking it is The MPEN any suggestions? any advice or comment are greatly appreciated
Thanks
Matt

Double check the wire connections for good Positive+ and ground-. That's a new one on me too.

yea i jumped the solinoid and it will turn over all day long, all connections are good...I got a new mpem in today im going to try it hopefully it is whats wrong with the thing

I would take the boot off the end of the impeller shaft, and pull the spark plugs out. Grab the shaft under the boot and see it it turns by hand. It might have a flat spot on the crank...from being installed incorrectly. Did you rotate it after it was assembled? It doesn't sound like a bad mpem.Keep us posted on your progress.

I hope that it fixes your problem. if not please do not order any thing else without a few other people agreeing with what you are going to buy. we are all here to try and save you time and money. good luck Robin

I got the new mpem in and it is still doing it....i rotated it by hand and there doesn't seem to be any flat spot on the crank..i know for sure i put the engine together correctly...I have built at least 100 of these engines in my lifetime....i have never had this much trouble with a pwc..i jumped the solinoid again and and the starter will turn over fine tested all switchs looked over all connections i am stumped

I just thought it might be a chance that it had a flat spot...I didn't mean you didn't do it correct. I'm stumped too. I'll do some research and get back to you to try something else. Sometimes it is the simplest thing that is causing a problem and it is overlooked. We'll figure it out!

Matt, is it possible that the starter is just worn out? Any idea if it was 100% before the rebuild? I have the manual open now and I'm looking at any possible thing that might lead down the path...

Matt, also check the black wire coming from the Starter solenoid on the bottom and going to the coil. This completes the circuit to allow the solenoid to connect and switch the power to the starter from the battery.
There is a 6 connector plug that has the(5 wires 1 empty slot ) wires to the Mpem in the rear electrical box. 1 wire is from the VTS module(Black) The other 4 come from the Mpem// white to coil, Black to coil, Yellow/ Red to solenoid switch, and Red/Purple to 15 amp fuse that goes to hot lead on solenoid. Check these wires and let me know if it helps. These are the only wires that influence the starter.
