97 spx 800 died

was out on the lake with my ski running great. jumping some small waves. nothing big. than after I stated to go again the ski died like I unplugged the key. pulled the seat on the lake and electrical smoke was coming out. knew from the smell. towed the ski in went home checked over the wires could not find anything. pulled the rear electrical box no smell looks good. checked the 5 amp fuse and it's blown in the mepm. put a new one in pull the plugs and cranked it. spins over for about 3 seconds and blows the fuse. I'm thinking shorted stator due to the smoke. but looking for input

When that 5 goes, usually it’s the morning is gone.
However, I have never seen one short out to melt a wire.

Have not found any melted wires. and I assume you mean the mepm instead of morning.

I would check the ground wire going too the starter

FIXED, I put the ski on the hose ran it and found the VTS Shorted inside the modules and melted a hole in the potting and seen smoke blowing out of it.
