Hello I just recently purchased a 97 speedster with twin 717 engines. On my 3rd trip to the lake while at speed one engine died. I limped it back in on one engine. I finally broke down and purchased a compression tester and did the check. The rear cylinder tested at 130 and the forward at 35. So now do I rebuild ony the upper end or replace the whole engine. What could have caused this?

Since the engine is 15 years old... and you just bought the boat... I wouldn't mess around with a top-end. Do a full rebuild if you want a trouble-free boat.

Well... without an autopsy... I'd say that the engine just lived it's life. When the compression starts to drop... blow by gasses overheat the piston skirts, and cause a melt down.

With that said... check the compression on the other engine. If it's at 135 or lower... you may want to consider a top-end on it, before it gives up also.

Last thing... Rotax engines are very specific on they type of oil needed. If you put a TC-w3 oil in it... that will kill the engines premature. Seadoo/Rotax needs an API-TC oil.

Thanks Dr Honda for the reply. I suppose a rebuilt engine would be in order. The other engine(good engine) has a grey top. Does that mean it has probably been rebuilt or replaced?

Gray?? If the entire engine is silver... then it's a rebuilt engine. That boat's engines where originally white.

If it's just the head shell that's a different color... then who knows what's inside. Your best bet is to check the compression. That will tell you everything you need to know.

Yes it's all silver and both cylinders have 145 on the compression. Would you recommend sbt over pwc for the rebuilt engine?

I have no issues with SBT. They ship quick... and are the only shop that does an exchange. So... they send you an engine... and once you get them swapped... you send back your old engine. Most other shops want you to send your engine to them... and then you wait (3 to 6 weeks) to get your engine back.
