97 seadoo challenger 787 sputtering at wot!!! help me guys...

I took my challenger out for the first time this weekend, starts and idles great, when it did get on plane it was great, fast and fun. My problem is at full throttle, it would sputter and sound like it was backfiring, i would bring the throttle back half way and it would be ok, then do the same when i open the throttle up. I would let it sit for a while and it would run great and get on plane, but if I let go of the throttle and open it up again it would start with the same problem. Should I start by checking the in carb filters?

Thanks in advance

You said you had to bring it back half-way for the sputtering to quit. Is that accurate or only off full throttle to make it go away?

it would only do this at full throttle, i got it to plane out 2 times and it ran great, once i slowed down and brought the throttle back it would start with the same problem.

cmon guys!!!! 24 views and no one can help me???

well we are not mind readers or magicians. what was done to the boat? what did you do before riding this year? what is the history of the boat?
there is a ton of info here about Carbs and how necc it is to have them clean and functioning properly for the best performance...
Did you start out with fresh plugs? was the boat previously winterized and you burned thru the storage oil and now have this issue?

if you have a fresh set of plugs in and they didn`t foul, this could be fuel related. if it is electrical after you went down the check list for a fuel related issue then it could be something more, coils, low voltage etc etc... but my "guess" so far with little info would be , when was the last time the carbs were rebuilt?

new plugs, check fuel hoses and filters, if the fuel pump is original it could be low volume at high demand. Look at the pulse line to the fuel pump if you have remote pumps. the chokes are staying open yes? nothing freaky with any linkage?

see, there is a lot to check...

now that the boat was run, what do the plugs look like? verify that your oil pump adjustment is correct as is throttle full pull.

if it were me, I`d be looking into the carbs, gaskets, etc etc and make sure the engine can breath, the FA isn`t all gummed up... good luck, report back...

Usually this is a problem with the fuel system. I would look to see if the carb fuel filters (External and Internel) ones are not partialy clogged. I would take the carbs off and clean them up. It can't hurt to make sure they are all cleaned. Your Rave valves might need adjustments. The list is can be long like Pale Rider said. It sounds like you just got it so I would go through all the maintence/adjustments to make sure it is all good? Did you test out the boat on the water before you bought it?

I am asking for a specific reason as to how far do you have to back it off for the sputtering to quit?

I would start going through the list today. I have to back it up to about till about half way.

if you have no history or service records of when the carbs were rebuilt/cleaned I`d start with that and start sourcing the kits and gaskets to complete the job... also a service manual will help tremendously...

I would not continue to run the boat this way until it was repaired/corrected...

starting with the simple things first and continuing until it`s fixed.
Plugs etc etc...

As Pale Rider eluded to, I would:
1. Change the fuel filters.
2. Pull the carbs and clean them internally paying special attention to the internal button filter. Make sure to check the pop off pressure.
3. Pull the fuel baffle check and clean the bottom screen.
4. Remove the RAVE valves and clean them. Check the O rings and springs...replace if necessary. Reset them about 2 to 3 turns (midway down) Make sure they move freely.
5. If your boat has a fuel selector valve...replace it. They are usually not worth cleaning.
6. Probably replace some or all the fuel lines, especially if they are old looking.

I believe, as others, that you have a fuel delivery problem.
This is a good start IMHO. Good Luck!

Sorry guys. It took me a while to get back on my boat.
as I last stated, my bout would idle fine, run fine for a couple of minutes, then it would start bogging and backfiring at WOT but it would be ok if I ease the throttle. I got some advise from ya'll and started going through it.
1. I replaced the fuel selector valve
2. Clean carbs out, they where not dirty at all, internal filters were clean as a whistle
3. Checked fuel baffle, It was not dirty and tested with a OHM meter, checked out good.
4. Replaced spark plugs and bought a couple to keep as spares ;)
5. Drained gas and replaced with fresh fuel
6. Checked fuel lines, it seems that previous owner replaced gray lines. I do have 2 gray lines going to the carbs, about 4 inches long each, should I also replace those?
7. I checked and claned RAVE valves, mag side was clean, but pto side was real dirty, black, there was a little bit of oil on the inside of the RAVe valve and was very loose, I was able to take it off by hand, should it be this loose?? Could this had been the cause of my bogging problem??

Any input is appreciated.

My thoughts are it's too lean...

Adjust your high speed mixture screws counterclockwise a 1/16 or an 1/8 of a turn... See if that gives you good results. Check the plugs after you make the adjustment...

Before you make any adjustment, I would make a mark with a silver pen to indicate exactly where you moved from.

Have you lake tested yet??
If you have, does it run any better??

When you lake test and the engine starts to bog, pull the choke out a little. If the engine clears up then you are lean.
You will then need to enrichen the fuel as has been eluded to previously.

I havent been able to test it yet, hopefully I can tomorrow, but its coming along great, starts right up, installed a stereo with marine speakers and 10' sub woofer, sounds awesome!!
