I went and bought this not to long ago I bought a new agm battery with 325 cca and it will only crank over without plugs i tried just putting 1 spark plug in 1 out of the 2 pistons it cranked fine but when I swapped the spark plug that was in the first piston to the 2 piston it wouldn't crank it would only do 1 rotation like it had a dead battery. I took some of the top end off to look at the pistons the cylinder walls and piston look great. I'm wondering if the starter could be weak or maybe to much friction with the jet. when I get home I'm thinking on trying to jump the starter to see if the solenoid is weak. any advice would be nice

Don't jump start your ski. If your fry the MPEM its a $695 replacement item. More than like if it's a new battery take both plugs out and turn it over to make sure you're not hydrolocked. If that checks out, I'd rebuild the starter. It's around $40 for the rebuild kit.

the pistons move fine i checked that I was thinking about just replacing the starter if I open it up and there's water a bunch of water build up.
do you know of any good replacements or should I just get oem?

I’ve bought them from Amazon, EBay or from OSDParts.com. Make sure your starter is a DENSO OEM starter

well good news i cracked open the starter and its all burnt up so I'm hoping that is the problem so I think im going to find a rebuild kit for it

That sounds like you found your problem! Make sure not to lose the two lil washers that set on top of the shaft. They sometimes come off and get stuck on the magnets. Also did you mark the sleeve with the top and bottom pieces so you know how to put it back together?

Did you happen to do any jet pump work?if you did you might of messed up the thrust washer and it could be binding.the starter looks crappy but just a thought

I was just about to post the same issue on a 98 GTX. When I winterized it I put a little oil in the cylinder via the plug holes. When I tuned over without plugs it was fine. Put the plugs in and it would not turn. I thought maybe the oil hydro locked it so I turned the ski over and ran the starter without plugs to push out any residual oil. But now it spins weaker without plugs and not at all with plugs. Used a new battery and jumper pack with no change. I checked the nut of the positive battery wire on the starter and found it rotates but does not have a feeling of loose play. When I tried to tighten the nut it spins the wire so will only turn as far as the slack. I also found what feels to be a jam nut on the back side (cannot see this only by touch). Is this normal/design? Could this be the starter as well? Was fine in the fall, but maybe all the spinning with the plugs out upside down took it from marginal to bad?

No that should not spin.when you spin it the brushes attached to the post breaks strands of wire.you unfortunately have to pull the starter.but it's not that hard on those.when you put it back together put the starter in the freezer and grease up orings

So somehow it broke free in the starter? Starter is bad now? Any tips on starter removal, not easy access.

They vibrate loose are if people dig around they hit the positive wire and loosen up.get a long extension work far away from the bolt you can some had 13 mm bolts and some had 5mm Allen.try and use a long extension so your not tight against the motor they are not that bad to do.but I have done thousands of starters in my 30 years working on sea doos

And when you put it back together use red loctite on the bolts.you don't have to go crazy cleaning the threads that's why I use red never had trouble replacing it after a few years
