97 GTX Random Shutoff Problem (Electrical)

The problem:
I will be riding along and the machine will just shutoff as if someone pulled out the safety key (but the key is still on the post). The behavior is random. Some days it will only happen 3 or 4 times other days it will happen every 10sec, 2 minutes or whenever. Totally unpredictable. I have two keys and it happens with both. The computer just totally shuts off, and I have to take the key off the post and re-insert it in order to get it to start again. (If I dont take the key off and try to start it, it will act like there is no key on it, when in fact there is). It is not a short in the key/post connection because I can wiggle the key all around while I am riding and it wont shut off... so I am thinking that it is internal wiring or computer.

I Bought this 97 GTX 3 years ago. Seller said it had a problem with the lanyard post and that a local dealer told him to replace the post and the problem would go away.

Well it didnt. New Post same problem.

Has anyone else had this problem fixed? if so, How?

I read somewhere about testing the resistance across some of the wires to make sure that it is in spec, but I dont know what to test and what the spec is. The puzzling part is that it is random.

Thanks for any help.

i was gonna say clean the post, but then i read everything you said. check all the plugs in the wiring harness. unhook them, look inside for corrosion. feel if they seem too loose. unbolt the gang ground in the electrical box and sand all the ring terminals clean. could be a bad mpem, but try all the cheap and free things again first.

Have you replaced the grey fuel lines and cleaned the carbs? Mine was doing the same thing, full throttle or half throttle and all of sudden nothing. Engine was off. I had to take off the lanyard and reapply.

i have the same problem with my 2000 sea doo. i checked the wiring diagram to see if there are any shut off sensors, like oil. did not see any. do you know if there are any sensors that could detect low levels or high temps?

klein...best thing is what "derek" had mentioned...check loose connects, maybe frey in wire somewhere, then out in lake, able to hit bad spot, thus kill'n the motor...
