I have a 97 gti and it has started fouling the plugs up within 2 or 3 hours of various use. the plugs are wet and black when removed. it runs fine around 30 mph but will not reach much higher without missing/spitting.

hey....do compression check, ideal is 150psi. If ok, then I'd look into cleaning/rebuilding the carbs, check carb settings...

That compression test would help determine condition of the rings.

But I suspect carbs in any case because if goes lean from clogged filters, then you won't have enough fuel to do complete combustion and you get left over 2-stroke oil unburned.

I checked compression, 150 on both cylinders. pulled carb and rebuilt, was very clean on the inside, filter a little clog. the plug fouling went away, but it would still not run good above 30mph. pulled wires out of spark plug boots, and cut them back 1/4 inch, reinserted, also noticed you have to twist them all the way in to get good contact. then it ran about 35 to 40 but still some top end missing. so I pulled the ignition unit out of the box, there was some standing water in it. drained it and reterminated the plug wires there and now everything runs great. about 45 top speed. thanks for all the info
