97 gti idling rough

I have a 97 gti that idles very rough after about 30 seconds. it runs great part throttle and wide open throttle, but after coming back to idle, will idle good and then start to die down. smokes alot at idle also. and today it wouldn't even crank, tried new plugs, no help. i have adjusted the low speed idle both ways, no help

Check engine compression, that may help save alot of trouble shooting and tuning if it is an engine trouble. Post back and let us know then we can go from there.

pull plugs, and turn over motor, but with rag over holes. See if "substantial" amount of oil. Possible a leaky inner seal.
