97 GTi full throttle issue

Hi all,
I have a 97 GTi that runs fine as long as you don't try and give it full throttle from a stand still. When I do it starts to pull out of the hole really well then suddenly I loose thrust but the engine rpms still continue to rev as well as the speedodometer, but it doesn't go anywhere.

Also when it does get up to full speed the speedodometer shows anywhere from 50-70 mph, which is lie I know, it only goes about 45 MAX! with just me on it.

What would cause these issue, Are they related, I would think so. It has new plugs, new fuel, all filters change/cleaned, so what gives?

The only thing I can think of is a worn out wear ring, and water is getting by the impeller and not getting forced through???? Not sure.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A worn wear ring would be my assumption too if the motor is running fine, but you are going nowhere. Kind of like a "transmission slipping"

Anything else?

Is there anything else I should look at while I am looking anyway?

I have read clearance should be only .040 MAX so I will check that out and let you know. I had no idea it was that tight in the jet pump area.

Thanks for the help.

The Jet pump might be leaking air into the system and not allowing the impeller to hook up. First check the wear ring...then the front seal ring.
Wear Ring clearance for your seadoo 1.0 mm or (.040in) Measure the clearance at the center of the impeller blades, with a 12” long gauge. Measure the clearance from the venturi side of the jet pump.

I hope this helps.

I just got a call from a mechanic that is working on my seadoo. and he said that He will have to repair the ECM. how much does that cost and How long does it take to fix?

JD, the pump comes off real easy. 2 cables-steering and reverse. 10mm on both ends of connector. 4 13mm bolts holding the nozzle to the pump. 4 17mm nuts holding the pump to the ski. a little wiggling to free pump from hull and to free pump from driveshaft. now you can see what your impeller and wear ring look like. someitmes clearance is ok for some of the length, but there is a big gouge where it ate a rock. it might even have something stuck in it. i ordered wear ring and bearings for a pump for a friend cause he had a plastic milk jug wrapped around impeller. if impeller is really beat, you might wanna get a used pump on eBay. if wear ring is really beat, get a wear ring and a removal tool. then all you need is a big vise and a propane torch to remove the impeller. if you got stuff in there, get it out and change the pump oil before you put it back. this is the most neglected maintenance item on the ski.
