I have a 97 GSX that won't start with the ignition switch on the handle bars. The battery is fully charged and if I jumper the solenoid it will start. I can then shut the motor off with the handle bar ignition switch. I have checked all the wiring connections from the ignition switch to the electrical box in the front and checked all the fuses. About two years ago I had a no start condition and changed the ignition switch and it was working fine when I put it away last fall. Two questions, can it be another bad ignition switch? Is there a known problem with this switch?

The fuse in the rear box near the solenoid is good. The 15 amp fuse up front is good and I install another good one. Thanks for the help.

it is the starter solenoid. if it was DESS post, the motor wouldn't run. if it was start-stop switch, the motor would not do either when pressed. it is POSSIBLE but (thank god) remote that the mpem won't fire the solenoid even though the switch and post say go. if so, you need an mpem. or you need to rig another remote start switch to the solenoid.

i don't usually complain, but jessie, could you lose the avatar?

well i lost the avatar, it was carl on caddyshack. wasnt supposed to be offensive, just funny! i have tried just touching the 2 wires from the switch and still get nothing. that kicks on the cluster but still no start. so i am trying the switch with a new one. i see that the yellow red wire goes into the solenoid then it has a black wire that is grounded on the coil via a lag bolt. is this correct? my wiring diagram shows what looks like it should goto the starter post on the solenoid??? i dont have a clue. any help would be appreciated.

Hilarius Avitar!

I thought it was an Einstein wannabee!

And with a Greek name like yours, (CONSOPOLUS) I just assumed that it all fit.

Greeks were always looking for wisdom!

:)

Sorry I can't help with any of your mechanical electrical troubles!

If the switch grounds the engine and it stops it it sounds like it might be the MPEM not sending a power impulse to the solenoid, which in return allows the solenoid to connect to operate the starter. I'll check the wire diagram and let you know a little later today...I'm not sure if you realize this but all the moderators here are "Freebie, Volunteers" and have real jobs. I have been slammed at work, so I haven't been able to get on the forum too much since Saturday... I have been working 12 hour days. I will get back a little later this afternoon...

Tks

thanks for the information karl, its on its way to the seadoo dealer today. they seem to think it is the key not being recognized. i will post what they tell me today.

fixed

just got the boat back from the dealership, new key and a charged battery got mine fixed. i had the wiring correct he said so i am good to go. bout to put it in the water to see how she goes. thanks for the help guys.

I found a bad wiring connection at the solenoid, not sure if it was the two wire connector into the solenoid or the ground wires connected to the coil. I cleaned all and made sure I had good connections and it fired up. Thanks for the help, the recommendation to change the solenoid made me revisit the wiring at the solenoid and I found the issue there.

ya the wiring makes a difference. i checked and re-checked mine over and over. should be 5 wires grounded on the coil lag bolt. the guy at the local dealership went over it all with me. he told me that the #1 issue is the battery. even with a good key and it all wired correctly, my gauges would work but no start off the button. i charged the battery before i took it in and it fired right up. i had a brand new solenoid and coil on it so i knew it had to be in the switch or key on mine. glad to hear u got it going man.

I'm glad goth you guys got you seadoos going...now go have some fun.
Keep us posted if you have any other issues...or post some pictures and your good times too.

Battery?

Most members that post with a problem, will normally get responses that go deeper than the battery because it's automatically assumed by most members, including me, that the battery and fuses were already checked, since they are the no brainer, first steps that most do before posting in the forum.

For a change, it sounds like you have a good shop, with integrity. You don't find that much anymore.

Oh, BTW, I did like the avatar you had previously. I loved Caddyshack!..Bill Murray was cool! in that movie.

Good luck, glad your ready for the water again!.....:hurray:

ya it is one of the great ones, (caddyshack). The shop here is very cool, he even offered for me to come in sometime and learn more about the boat. He asked how I knew what I knew so far and I told him seadoo forums so expect another new member soon. Tks for all the help and love the new avatar!

O and btw, the shop here programs the keys for free, the key cost 43 bucks though. might be worth the trip to eufaula, oklahoma eh? u guys might like the big ole lake here!

That's dealer is a keeper...here in Florida it's $99.00 just in the door...1 hr. minimum.
