Gotta 97 GSX bought this year. Mechanic said he Put a new top end on it. Took is out for some spins and thing wouldn't go? Would not get above 3900 RPM at first. Finally got to about 5000 RPM made a left turn, down to 3900 hundred again. Killed it, looked under the seat. Nothing out of the ordinary? Fired up, took off 5000 RPM. Drove for 10 min at 5000 RPM making right hand turns! Make another Left Hand Turn and back to 3900 RPM? Should I in this order check?

Check compression
Look at fuel lines
Change if bad
Check Wear Ring
Rebuild the carbs

Any advice is greatly appreciated

Do some searching on the internet, I read something somewhere on the left hand turn problems before, I think... You could check those things anyways just to cross them off the list. One would think they checked the carbs with a top end rebuild.. Maybe they didnt?

The guy has turned out to be less than resectabel, and would be surprised if he even rebuilt the top end?

Anywhere in particular I could search?

My 97 GSX was jumping from 3000 rpms to about 5500 rpms i replaced the rectifier because i thought it was not getting enought power. put a meter on the battery when its not running and see what it is. then start it it should be reading 14.6 when running or close to it. if it reads fine i would look at the carbs cuz the rectifier helped but it dident fix it. i ended up sending it to a shop and having the carbs rebuilt and it ran fine. hope this helps.

i'd pull trhe RV plate and check degree timing, along with all thee above you mentioned. "Mechanic" said..etc,...thats the first problem. Check everything yourself, if capable. Hit forum up, if you get stuck.

Alrighty. Did a compression test. 148 PSI on both cylinders. Pretty good there. Got to the wear ring and this thing is toe up. Will replace and the spark plugs. While doing the comp test, noticed I had a 7ES in one hole and an 8 ES in the other. Will keep posted. Any suggestions are GREATLY appreciated!
