i just picked up a 97 gsi in great shape it just has a problem with starting and it will only run for a short time and will die i am not sure how the dess works like how many beeps when plugged in and it does not always react when the teather is plugged in. The boat has very low hours on it the guy i got it from said it has been doing that since the second summer he got it and the dealer here is not to up on water craft i tried to get a wiring diagram and they had no books. one other thing is can i bypass the dess and just put a regular teather on it. Thanks for any help because i know nothing about the electronics on this boat

Hey...clean the DESS post, swab out the lanyard. Then take compression test, 150psi is good, also, check volts at battery, 14.5-ish, and battery, make sure its charged. Last, check out fuel system, ask him, if ever did carb rebuild, theres internal filterals that get clogged up, if fuel lines grey, replace them....check her out, and repost what you've found....late

Sure it is dess Related ?

Does it act like it is starved for fuel when it dies ?...could be other issues with it...i know there is so many problems with fuel lines on these year models...hard to tell tho by your discription of how it is running...might help you get more answers if you could explain more what it is doing.

Is it hard to start all the time ? or start fairly easy then die ?
Does it start easy then die as you give throttle ? if so it could be a fuel issue.

Does it have the Grey fuel lines on it still ?. if so that would be a big problem there as they clog the filters in the carbs and also make it die a lot as it is starved for fuel ( had those issues in my 97 GTI ) I changed all fuel lines in mine Takes about 14 foot of new 1/4 inch fuel line and new stainless steel clamps...Im still new here but i do see these issues a lot on here ...hope it helps

Oh ya the filters in the carbs are very easy to clean so thats not a big issue either but they can cause you a lot of headaches with those grey lines on there as they will be clogged with a black looking tar like substance that shuts them down fairly quick hehe ...learned that one the hard way on the lake lol.

it does have the gray fuel lines on it,the boat only has maybe 4 hours on it if that, i will change the fuel lines and clean the filters but i think it is electrical because i have a hard time getting it to turn over i had found a loose connection at the start stop switch and soldered all the connections and the battery is charged up. When i did have it running yesterday i took a screwdriver and tapped on the housing around the dess switch and it died. When i plug the teather into the switch it does not always beep at me. How does the dess work is there a resistor in the teather?
