Boat = 1997 Challenger (single engine)
Probably just a simple yes or no question... I just need confirmation I am not missing anything.
Do I need another new starter? All I get is a click.
I have 12.56 volts to the starter with the start button pushed between starter Positive (red) and ground. I put a new solenoid on yesterday (because I keep a spare and I was hoping to not take this starter out again). I put the starter on in July and I think it is already bad. Battery is fully charged 13.15v. Voltage across solenoid = zero with no button push. Voltage is 13.0 across solenoid with start button pushed. Again, voltage across starter with start button pushed is 12.56v but I just get a click. I can turn the motor from under the boat with the shaft using pliers (rag wrapped around the shaft). I did try to tap the starter, thinking the armature was on a bad spot or something like that (it used to work on the old one - pre-July).
Q2: Should there be some type of gasket between the starter and engine?
Q3: Am I missing something here that may not be the starter?
Q4: I did have a lot of water in the engine compartment at one point after the new starter was put on but I drained it before trying to start. I don't think the starter was completely submerged but could that cause a starter to go bad?
Answer to the pending question: Yes, it was a cheap $45 starter from eBay and no he won't honor a return or give me any credit for a new one.
Of coarse this is when I was wanting to winterize the boat. I did get all the water out and ran antifreeze through it so it is kind of ready for winter...
Thanks in advance - sorry to waste your time...
