97 Challenger starboard motor has no spark- help please

finally got a donor motor installed. I noticed when I pulled the old motor (saltwater boat) that at the bottom of the starter a wire connection had been corroded off that apparently was a ground to the engine block. It was just the eyelet connector with no wire connected to it. I found a black wire coming out of the mpem box that looks like it had gone there as it's about the right length. The motor turns over fine, has fuel and compression but no spark. Does this apparent ground feed only the starboard side and does it have anything to do with getting spark? Port motor runs great. When i look at it inside the mpem box it's connected to a common point where a bunch of wires converge. I find it odd that the starter and everything else seems to work fine on the starboard side. I'm thinking if I put a test light on the starboard coil small white wire while cranking and it lights up, the pickup coil inside the stator housing should be good and maybe it's this wire or the coil itself. Thoughts?
