The Kawasaki fuel senders are known to go bad over time. They have 4 floats on the sender that move up and down per each quarter of a tank of gas. Over time these floats do not "float" in the gas anymore. Therefore parts of your gas gauge will stop registering. Odds are in your case the upper floats have gone bad.
The fix is to purchase a working fuel sending unit. They come up from time to time on eBay used.
