96 xp new motor

a friend of mine just had a new motor put in his 96 xp. the weather finally broke and went to run our skis. found that the new motor would not go more then 35 maybe 40 mph. we brought them in and i changed the fuel lines, and in carb fuel filters as well as the in line fuel filter. ski ran better but did not seem up to par. then i noticed it was not pissing out water at the back of the ski. so i found an island and removed the clog from the pisser. the ski runs fine now but it doesnt feel like it has the get up and go that the others do. how to i check to see if its the right engine??? would a smaller engine bolt up to everything the same??

does it feel like the wear ring is worn out? are you getting full rpm's? and no thrust? or is it the motor not reaching the red line? im sure you made sure the raves were clean and working properly when you put the motor back in
