Someone please help. I have a 96 XP. I blew the MPEM (#278-000-510) about a year ago by hooking it up to a jumper box. Oops! I did some googling and read that the MPEM from a 96 GSX (#278-000-897) would work as a replacement. Since then, I have purchased one off ebay and istalled it, however, the original MPEM has a purple and a black/yellow wires in front of the spare fuse holder while the new one has a purple, black/yellow and a grey one. WTF? I didnt think much of it and I just took the ski down to the local dealer to have the dess programmed. The ski will now crank over, but has no spark. There are also no "beeps" now when the DESS is pluged in. By now, I am about to scream and sink the thing into Mission Bay. So I have a few questions:
1) will the MPEM #278-000-897 work on a 96 XP
2) What the hell do I do with the extra grey wire
3) Where did my spark and beep go

Thank you for all your imput/responses. Its about desert/glamis season so I might just let this thing sit for another year and ride my bikes dirtbike. Lol.

MPEM's..........

Jude, I hope your ebay purchase isn't going to turn out to be a clunker....

Your 2 mpem numbers don't pan out to be interchangeable, but if the only wire you say you have left over is the grey one, then I don't see why it won't work. The grey wire is your tach wire. It goes to your tach and your info center.

Do you have a grey/white wire that isn't connected?

Both the GSX and XP use the DC-CDI igntion system, there doesn't seem to be any differences in the electrical layout, as far as the mag, regulator and charging system are concerned. Your purple wire is power and the bl/yl is to your DESS system.

With your lanyard off the DESS post, push the start/stop button 5 times. You should get a long and short beep. If so, this tells you that your in the advanced diagnostics mode. Then, put your lanyard on the post. If you get beeps, count them, re-post. If you don't, push the start button and see what happens...............

Technically, the books say they aren't a match, for me, looking at the electrical drawing, I don't see why not, unless that grey wire is needed to send a signal to the mpem on the engines revolution, so that each time the trigger coil snaps, it sends the signal through the grey wire to the mpem and the mpem in turn tells the coils to fire..............that's the only way I can see that it won't work.................which is kinda your problem.

Tell me if you have the grey/white wire and what it is connected to.

Wow. I would do amything right now to have you as my neighbor. As for having any wires not connected, no. I disconnected and reconnected them one by one to the new MPEM. The only grey/white wire i see on the thing is to the top left of the fuses and is part of a triangle plug along with a black and white/blue( white with a blue stripe, I hope i am calling them out correctly). I have to get ready for work, so later today i will try to do the 5 time start/stop thing you had mentioned and re-post. I do appriciate all the help though. It isnt trying to fix a seadoo over the internet. Your mechanical stills and knowledge should somehow be rewarded. Thanks again.

Seadoosnipe. Ok, i decided to take an "executive morning" and go in late to work. I just hooked up the MPEM and pressed the start/stop 5 times. I got
(1) quick beep and (1) normal one. From what I heard from other posts, it appears that these 96 XP's are problems from day one. What a way to cut my teeth in PWC mechanics. I should have stuck with dirtbikes and quads. lol.
Have a great day.
