96 xp ignition timing

96 xp 800

I bought a 96 XP 800 and put a aftermaket pipe on it made by "FACTORY". The dealer gave me nothing but the pipe itself. I bought a gasket and put the pipe on and have rejetted the carbs. I also put aftermarket flame arrestors on it and put two new carb kits on the carbs. I am still having problems getting it start in the water. Once I do get it running it sounds like it is misfiring. Upon doing some homework I realized that the pipe was suppposed to come with a different rev limiter. I guess i just need to know if putting the pipe on without the recomended rev limiter will throw off my timing and if i buy the recommended rev limiter will this fix my problem?

You check the timing with a timing light. Just follow the manual. Installing the Factory Pipe will not affect the timing. Is it a spec 1 or a spec 2 Factory Pipe? If it came with a manifold, it's a spec 2 and should have included a water injection solenoid and module. You may have problems not related to the pipe. Have you checked your rotary valve clearance?

Thanks for the tip. The pipe did come with a manifold but no water injection solenoid or module. I am in the process of trying to find the solenoid and module but it is somewhat expensive. Do I have to have them? I will look into the rotary valve clearance as well.
