96 XP fuel problems--please help

Trying to get 96 XP running. At first, after sitting for years, it would start and rev up on the flush hose but wouldn't get up and run. Classic symptoms apparently of gunked up filters and old gray lines, which was true. So I replaced all lines, cleaned fuel selector and did quickie cleaning of carb where I could get to their guts in the ski, including cleaning up the gunked up internal filters. Then it started, but would take no throttle before it bogged down, like getting too much fuel.

So I removed carbs and did a decent cleaning and bought rebuild kits, replacing the easy stuff including the internal filters and all gaskets and diaphrams, but did not mess with popoff valves. Also the internal valve assembly (held by two screws) would not come off on one side but the other side looked fine.

Put it all together and now it's doing the same thing as after I replaced the hoses--starts and idles but any throttle results in bogging down and stalling. Spark plugs are wet and gassy. Since it's the same symptoms as after I replaced the hoses, wondering if I did something wrong there. I was careful, but. . . Any suggestions? Greatly appreciate the help.

Check the filter

I had a 95 do something similar.. One problem was the fuel selector switch, try by passing it. Just take the line from the res side and connect it directly to the carb feed.. It's easy to do and will eliminate a potential problem. Also check the gasket for the fuel bowl under the hood..If that has any air leaks you will have fuel delivery issues.. You can put a cheap in line filter in place for testing..

sorry for the double post everyone

I'll try those things. On bypassing the selector, connect the carb hose to the res nipple on the baffle or what?

still starving fuel

I bypassed the selector and installed an inline filter. No change, and the inline filter is not getting much fuel in it. Which indicates not getting enough fuel. I double checked the line from the crank case to the fuel pump and it's good. No kinks in the fuel line. Is there a simple mistake I could have made when putting the fuel pump back together?

I had a similar problem. I pumped out the gas tank and found I had about 8 cups of water in the fuel. I got the fuel out by getting a 3/4 in clear hose and zip tied a 2 inch 10mm Hex head bold to the end of the hose and put it in the gas tank. (I put the bolt on the line so that I could here when it hit the bottom of the tank) Then I siphoned off about 2 gallons of gas and got the water out and it worked fine. I put the gas in 1 gallon clear apple juice Jug to see the water and you can separate it just fine that way so you aren't throwing you money away.

gas is fine

During the hose replacement process I removed the fuel tank, cleaned it and reinstalled. Clean enough to eat out of. So water is not a problem. I really believe there must be a problem in the pump.

your diaphram in the carb probably has a hole in it i would suggest using a primer to get the fuel flowing and once the fuel is flowing you should be good.

Which diaphram are we talking about? I replaced all the simple parts in the carbs and the pump. If it's that thin black piece in the pump it is new.

What I did!!!

Last week I was working on the GTS and the phone rang.. I got back and forgot to put the rubber o ring in.. It didn't work well at all.. Sometimes you just need to do things twice...
