96 XP Dies Out After Restart

Hey everyone, I've had this problem for what seems like over a year now, but it's never been something major enough for me to really worry about fixing. But, it seems to be getting a little worse over time. The ski starts and runs great on reserve line. On regular line it will not run right at all, and die out randomly for seemingly no reason. Now, when running on reserve, it does run great with one exception. After running out on the lake for a while and killing the engine for a few minutes, she will restart fine as usual. But then after about 10 seconds of riding, the engine RPMs will drop to almost nothing and sometimes die out completely even with the throttle wide open. This only lasts for a few seconds, then shes back to normal until the next time I kill the engine. Or if it dies out, she will restart easily with the choke pulled and then run fine. The problem "seems" to be a little worse when under 1/2 tank of gas. Any ideas?

Bypass your fuel selector valve by running reserve line straight to factory filter. Pinch the other line (not the vent or return lines). If it corrects the issue you can leave it bypassed or replace fuel selector valve. While checking check for proper functioning of your vent/pressure relief valves. Or You can easily check all of this by doing a pressure test on you fuel system.

Thanks, how do you check the vent/pressure relief valve? Also, I forgot that I had actually bypassed the fuel valve last Summer in an attempt to fix the problem, which obviously failed.

Also, here's an update. The problem has gotten much worse. I now have to fix it as it's barely ride-able. Again, this all started last Summer, but it was just a minor nuisance only occuring on some restarts. Now it happens all the time. At times it can still run strong. If you're at WOT and keep it there, it will run fast and hard. The problem is getting to that point. After idling for just a few seconds, it will die under heavy or even medium acceleration. Problem is the same regardless of fuel level.

How old are the plugs?
They were replaced at the beginning of the season. Nonetheless, today I went ahead and replaced them, as well as cut the plug wires back a bit hoping that would make a difference. I also tightened various hose clamps throughout the fuel system and plugged a fuel line from the tank that was unused due to the selector bypass. Unfortunately none of that made any difference at all. The ski just falls flat and dies when you give it significant throttle. It starts ok, idles fine, and runs ok till about 1/4 throttle. Then it will just fall flat and die. Sometimes you can get it past this point and run it hard, in which it usually rides ok until you drop the throttle back down.

This is my 4th season since carb rebuild, wonder if that would be the thing to do?

So I went ahead and rebuilt the carbs... problem still exists! I'm really stumped now as Ive gone through basically the entire fuel system. Only part I haven't looked at is the fuel baffle, which I will do tomorrow.

Again, ski will basically run ok at times. But after idling for just a few seconds and accelerating, it will bog down for a few seconds and barely stay on or die out completely. Any ideas anyone?

If its not your rectifier...might have to take a look and test the magneto and maybe the CDI to see if your getting consistent spark delivery.

Have you looked at your water regulator on top of the water box....maybe the bellows has a hole in it or the spring is broken. Not sure if this would cause the extreme symptoms your experiencing but its an easy part to look at....and if faulty can cause some low speed performance issues etc.

Check your compression in each cylinder to make sure your not chasing fuel and spark issues while its a compression problem.

Will do, I just don't think it's a compression problem. Engine rebuilt about 3 years ago and can still run strong at times, getting to about 53 mph.

I hope you get this thing figured out. Pop open that water regulator see what it looks like.

I have a 96 787 GTX with mid/low range 1/8 throttle to 3/4 throttle sputtering/hesitation issues too. Mine doesnt die out though like yours. But also runs awesome at wide open throttle. I chased all the fuel targets: lines, tank, rebuilt carbs twice, tried different carbs and increased the pilot jet size (70 to 72.5 helped some) but still wasnt perfect. Read on here or some other forum to look at the water regulator valve on top of the water box....opened mine up and the spring was broken in three pieces. Have repaired it and waiting to see this weekend at the lake if it helps or fixes my low to mid ranges sputtering low power issues.

Thanks, yeah this is definitely a tricky one. I actually replaced the water regulator about two years ago, so I doubt that's it, but I'll definitely check it since it takes two seconds. I'm going to replace the negative battery cable as it's an aftermarket one, and both terminals on it are rusty as hell. Then I'll check the rectifier as well. Checked the fuel baffle and all looked fine.
