I have a 96 spx hull, but I'm pretty sure the motor is an xp. I think I remember the guy selling it tellling me it was a 660. i dont even know if the xp comes in a 660. not sure though. it has been 5 years since i have started it and it wont start now. i get the 2 beeps when i hook up the lanyard. it ran fine when i stored it but now when i try to start it all i get is a loud click. i replaced the plugs and the battery so i know those are good. my friend says he thinks it is the starter. but i think it may be locked up. he said i should be able to spin the impeller shaft by hand, but i tried and it doesnt work. any ideas?

Take the plastic pto cover off the back of the engine(it will have 2 wing nuts) pull the spark plugs and the try turning the pto on the back of the engine to see if it spins. Let us know how it works,

'96 SPX has the 717 (720) with a white and green hull.
The Xp would have the 787 (800) with a solid yellow hull.

the 96 spx didn't have the dess system so if you are getting 2 beeps then something is different.

tell us the colors of the boat and what are the last 2 digits of the HIN, and look at the motor plate on the front of the engine to find the motor size, the only motors with DESS were 720 and 800 back then.

I took the plugs out and tried to spin the pto shaft but it doesnt turn. also, the last 2 of the hin are 96. the ski has been painted black and white. i would assume it is an 800 due to the yellow paint showing through on the hull and the yellow seat(discovered after removing aftermarket seat cover.) it has electronic trim if that helps at all. the guy that built it used to race it and removed most of the race parts when he sold it to me. it still has trigger throttle, open element air filters, the oil injectors are gone(pre-mix now.) all i know is I want to get it running again...all of this info could be insignificant...I am so confused! hahaha...

sounds like a 96 xp, it is all yellow with a yellow seat and has an 800 motor. the spx and xp are the same hull.

Well, if you can't turn it by hand with the plugs out, something is bound up in either the engine or the pump. pull the pump off first to eliminate that.

pump...

so, heres the thing...I dont know what part of the motor is the pump...should i get a manual for the 96 xp offline and go from there, or should i just take it to the shop?

People here can help you diagnose what's wrong wiith it, I wouldn't take it to the shop just yet.

It's no big deal, the pump is just the jet pump and bolts onto the rear of the ski. It's simple to remove and should only take about 15 to 20 minutes. First, using 2 10mm wrenches, unbolt the steering arm linkage and the trim arm from the pump assembly. Next, using a 17mm socket and a 12" extension, unbolt the 4 main nuts at the base of the pump, don't worry if you drop them on the ride plate, there easy to grab when the pump is out. Then, grab wiggle and pull the pump assy straight away and it will come out. That's it, now try to spin the impeller in the housing, and then try to spin the engine over by hand by the pto area again with the plugs out. Report back.

If anything is unclear, just ask. I've done this way too many times so I may not be explaining it very clearly.
