96 spx blowing 5 and 7.5 amp fuses

I bought a used 96 spx recently with a non functioning trim. I took the vts wiring apart and unclipped the wires for diagnosis later. As I am trying to get the machine running on the trailer to diagnosis the vts I am continually blowing fuses on the 7.5 every time I put a fuse in it and I am occasionally blowing the 5 amp fuse as I am running the engine on the trailer. It appears as if I have very clean terminal ends and good clean connections on the battery. I have had the machine running for intervals of 5 minutes on the trailer with water pumping through engine fine. It has great throttle response and idles nicely, but then will occassionally blow the 5 amp fuse. I am running it without the 7.5 amp fuse, because I cannot keep that fuse in the machine at all. Any suggestions??

The 7.5 fuse is for the vts...Quote from a Moderater...
You have the same rectifier as i do, so....disconnect the 2 yellows from it, in the electrical box, see if still pop'n, if so, then disconnect the red wire, while leav'n the 2 yellows disconnected, try that...

Disconnected both yellows and tried it, it ran for one minute before blowing the fuse. Disconnected red, it ran for another minute and blew another 5 amp fuse.???

105.1 the blaze

I had the same problem turns out i had a bad vts motor.easy to replace and mines a 96 xp just thought I would let you know.

Vts?

Have you heard the VTS motor move at all? When you say it pops the 5 amp occasionally. Is this when you've been running then you put the VTS fuse back in?

How long will the motor run with the 7.5 amp fuse removed? With that fuse removed, does it still blow the 5 amp? If so, are you pushing the up or down switch on the VTS selector?

The idea I have is that your VTS motor is shorted out and when it's supplied with power, the voltage from the rectifier backfeeds to the mpem, being caused from a dead short in the VTS motor.

My 96 VTS motor siezed and when I put the fueses back in - serious smoke poured out of the VTS system, pulled all the fueses and no more smoke. Sounds like your motor is going south.

vts

I had unit checked at dealership and they said I need a new mpem. I ordered one off line. It is not coming with a tether. Will my current tether work or will I need to have it reprogrammed? The VTS is a different story. The minute I put the fuse in, it pops the 7.5 immediately, before I can even reach for the trim buttons. ?? I did not have the dealership diagnosis the VTS.
