My boyfriend and I own a 1996 Seadoo Speedster twin engine. Yesterday we took the boat out, went once around the water. Docked at a local restaurant to grab lunch, left the key on the safety switch, went to eat lunch. Came back, took key off and went to put back on and got nothing. No beeps at all. Double and triple checked boat was in neutral, went thru all the proper restart steps and nothing, not one beep. Is the safety switch bad now or burnt out? He ordered a new one but our local seadoo mechanic is behind two weeks and we don't want to be without it so my guys going to try and fix himself. Anything else he should think of first before he replaces the safety switch? Any and all suggestions helpful. Thanks. :ack:

no, the boat does not start. put the key on, no beeps, tried pressing the start button and got nothing from either engine. he did also check the fuses and they are fine.

I've posted this before but I want to try re-explaining it again to see if I left things out last time. We are on a wait to get out boat looked at by the only Seadoo mechanic in our area who can't see our boat until June 23 :-( Anyway, about a week ago, we took our 1996 Seadoo Speedster out for a spin. Got in in the water. Started fine. Took a lap around the island and docked to get lunch. My boyfriend left the key on the safety switch (why I don't know) while we went to lunch. We came back. He took the key off to put it back on to start the boat. Nothing. Kept trying to make sure boat was in neutral. Still got nothing. Everything else on the boat works and battery is charged. We just get no beeps when we put the key on the safety switch and when we press the start buttons nothing happens at all. Any suggestions while we wait to take our boat to the mechanic and probably pay out the nose to have it fixed for something we may be able to do ourselves?

It could be that the "beeper" just isn't beeping. Put your hand on it to feel if it vibrates. It might be ok except it is not beeping. Did you try to see if the seadoo would start? If that is the case go to Radio Shack, and get one for about $15.00 and replace the old one. Another thing to do is clean the post and cap with soap and water to get it clean. use nothing else on the post and see if it works now. Let me know if this helps.
Make sure the battery isn't low on a charge or has a bad cell.If in doubt have it load tested to be sure, it's free at like Auto Zone.

Check the battery wires to the ground on the engine by the starter. It could be that the wire connections isn't a very good one or a loose of corroded wire. While you at it be sure the battery has a full charge or get it load tested. just checking for 12 volts won't tell ya if it has a bad cell or 2. Keep us posted.

Fuses...

Just mentioning....On my boat, theres a set of fuses in driver compartment, lift out the tub, and see if there's also, in case you missed these ones,.. also in the engine compartment, where all wires run into ,theres fuses in that too....repost

It shouldn't have blown fuses while at rest...it might be a battery that went dead over the lunch time from the lanyard on the DESS,( Digital Electronic Security System).

yes, he did which is why i wanted to repost making sure to include every detail. i left out previously that we tried starting the boat even though the safety wasn't beeping. still didn't start. i also left out that everything else that runs on the battery works, and battery is charged.

Now You're sure ALL the fuses are good... The ground- is good going to the engine by the starter. The battery is good/ fairly new/. Lets eliminate some things. Open the MPEM( Multi Purpose Electronic Module) box and jump across the solenoid with a 14 guage insulated wire(a pair of pliers will work too) to see if the starter will turning over. If it attempts to start that's good.
Use the following test to be sure these components are ok too. Use a Multi Meter to do the following tests.

Engine start/stop switch verification;
Disconnect the Yellow/Red wire of the start/stop switch. Using an ohmmeter, connect test probes to the Yellow/Red wire and to ground. Measure resistance, it must be an open circuit (switch is normally open). Depress and hold switch, the ohmmeter should read close to “0” ohm.

Safety Lanyard Switch Verification;
If 2 short beeps are not heard when installing the safety lanyard, disconnect the switch wires.

Safety lanyard removed;
connect the test probes to switch Black and Black/Yellow wires. It’s an open circuit, there should be no continuity.
Connect one test probe to the White/Gray wire and the other test probe to the switch terminal. Measure resistance, it should be “0” ohm. Connect one test probe to the Black wire and the other test probe to the switch ring. Measure resistance, it must be close to “0” ohm.
Safety lanyard on switch; connect the probes to switch Black and Black /Yellow wires. Measure resistance, it must be “0” ohm.

Timer Verification;
The timer is integrated into the MPEM. Always confirm that the fuses are in good condition. To confirm operation of timer, remove the safety lanyard from switch. After 5 seconds delay, depress start/stop button once. The timer should stay on for 33 seconds (for example, the guage(s) will be activated) and than turn off.

Let me know how you make out with these tests, and if something fails it might your problem. I'll be on the forum checking on you progress so we can get it figured out. Give me a shout if you get in a jam or are not sure with a proceedure. PM me too if you want....we'll get it running.

96 speedster with no beeps also

I currently have the exact same problem on my 1996 Speedster, basically the same scenario. I haven't gone through Karl's checklist...has it worked for you?

i have a speedster i KNOW is the neutral switch. when i try to start it it does not beep when i put on DESS and gives one long beep when i hit either start button. pull off DESS. wiggle shifter. try. one long beep. after 2 to 10 trys it gives 2 beeps and fires up. meanwhile i am drifting toward rocks and very angry at neutral switch. this is what you would get if it was neutral switch. so i don't think that is the problem.

derek, if it was the neutral switch it would be 4 short beeps when you try to start, not one long one. Recheck your manual, i think one long beep is a dirty connection on the dess lanyard.

The single beeeep is a bad connection to the landard post and the MPEM. It will do the same thing if its the wrong lanyard too.
