96 GTX safety lanyard cap issues

On my 96 GTX, erratically when putting the cap on the safety switch it won't beep... Sometimes it'll beep on the first try, sometimes a few tries, sometimes I start getting worried that I'm gonna be stranded... What's the deal? Is there some kind of fix/trick? Just bought this a month ago... Kinda irritating, always crossing fingers that it'll beep so I can start it... Thanks in advance for any suggestions

Try cleaning the inside of the cap and the metal on the DESS post. You can use a pencil eraser and then wipe clean with rubbing alcohol. If it does not beep but starts anyway your beeper or it's connections might be going bad. There is probably a 2 wire connector under the cowl that comes thru the steering column that has a purple-tan stripe wire (12V) and a tan-black stripe wire that gets grounded to activate the beeper.
