96 GTX low RPMs

I am a newbie and just inherited a 96 GTX. I had to replace the MPEM to get it running. First time in the water, I ran it about 30 minutes and it worked great -- revved to about 7000 at WOT and about 45-50mph on the speedometer.

Second time riding, again for about 30 minutes, and it maxes out at about 5000rpm at WOT and speedo is only reading about 15-20 (I know it is going faster than that, but slower than first time out). It is running very smoothly, but just not revving high enough.

BTW, I've only got one key, and I've not read anything about this model even having a learning key, but I could be wrong.

Any thoughts on what I can try?

I assume it does NOT have those old gray fuel lines?

If it does, you will have to replace them, and clean out the carbs, and the whole fuel system.

The gray lines look great on the outside, but are disintegrating into the gas, creating a crud that no filter can handle.

It makes the motor starve for fuel, and run too lean, and hot.

Don't even try to pretend that gray is ok!

I will also add that:

Mine did the SAME thing, ran for 2 hrs, and would only idle, or up to 1/2 throttle. Ran great at first.

I found this forum, due to the fact that it was starving for fuel.

And that you will need 25' of fuel line, and about 15 stainless steel clamps, and a good clean out of the carbs, filters, and jets. Also the bottom of the fuel baffle in the tank will need cleaning. And the water trap. Probably also clean out the fuel select valve.

It's fun.

Also clean the RAVE valve blades. Remove the hex screws under the black plastic caps with the red centers. They get carbon buildup and gummed up residue that makes them stick.

Yep, it's got the old gray lines, so I guess that will be my next project. I read on another post that it is not necessary to get fuel-injector lines since these are not under pressure. Any advice on what kind to get on a budget?

Ok, so I started last night to replace all the fuel lines and remove the carbs. I've got a couple of hopefully simple questions, but don't want to damage anything.

1) How do you disconnect the throttle cable and the choke cable from the carbs for removal? I'm working inside the hull and can't really see the underside of the carbs to see how to disconnect.

2) When I was replacing the lines from the tank to the fuel selector valve, I got confused on which line goes where on the top of the tank.

Thanks for your help.
