96 gti wont start new battery

ran great last year put brand new battery in when hook pos beep twice all check lights flash fuel gauge showed half full put lanyard key on everything blank off wont start? this is my first pwc and i know nothing about them. any advice be greatful thanks

Check the inside of the ignition box (where your spark plug wires run to) for water.

Short the terminals on the starter to see if it at least spins.

no water in box and motor will turn over the light only flash when i first hook up postive wire to battery. i dont get any flashs when i hook the lanyard key in place

When you hook the battery up connect the positive+ first, than the negative- for safety reasons, (disconnect in reverse). I would follow the ground wire to the engine by the starter and be sure it has a good clean connection. Be sure the battery has a full charge or it won't start. If in doubt, bring it to Auto Zone and they will load test it for free. Just because it has 12 volts doesn't mean its good.It could have a bad cell or 2 and not have enough amps to turn over the engine.

back from auto zone test the battery they say it was fully charge. hook postive wire first then neg. put key on got one beep push start button got not a thing.motor turns over great when cross it over . i check for bad grounds but cant find anything.. i'm about sure it some thing simple.. but its driving me crazy..lol thanks roger

still having not starting up guess it off to shop :ack:

Before you take it to the shop, dismantle the ignition box.

Remove each wire from each terminal, clean, inspect and the reconnect. There is also a fuse in the box you should check and replace if needed. (red wires at the bottom of this photo).

you said it spins when you jump the solonoid on the starter?? what does it do when you push the start button? nothing? or klicking? are you sure that when you have the kill button pushed in that there is continuity accross the switch??

it does nothing ill test the start button but when i put the safety key on it just beeps one time ... now im thinking after reading it may need re coded it was store in bucket that got some water in it not sure how long it was in the water.. not sure but maybe problem
