96 GTI Quit - Electrical Issue

Need a little advice for a newbie and very limited mechanical skill guy...

Picked up a 96 GTI and rode it all day last weekend when it finally gave up. Luckily we had been out and WAY down the lake but were very close to the marina and had a pontoon boat out with us that was able to tow it back to the ramp. My buddy was riding it when it died and he said it was sort of "bogging down" a bit before it gave up for good.

We opened it up the next day and found a loose connection to the battery and figured it might have been making enough contact to keep running but was losing a little bit of charge throughout the day. When I got it home I dropped another battery in it and still got "click click click." The DESS makes the two chirps when I put the key in it. I traced the clicking noise into the electrical box (MEMM?) and directly to the solenoid. I pulled it out and thought I could use one I had gotten as an extra for my riding mower a while back but it was a much different design...

A couple of questions:

1. Are these solenoids something that you need to really get a Seadoo specific part for?
2. Does is sound like the solenoid is the culprit?

I don't know crap about electrical systems. A buddy suggested I check all the wires and connections from the battery into the electrical box. Nothing seems loose.

Thoughts?

buddy put a Ford relay in his 98xp, so sure that relay you got, will work. Make sure you check all the fuses, theres one at the relay 15amp, but sounds like, thats the culprit, also, nspect the cable from relay to starter...

Thanks. I meant to include that I checked the fuses. Both the 15 amp and the 5 amp fuse looked good. I guess I should just go ahead and replace them anyway? I can't tell from your reply... Do you think it is the solenoid or the fuse that is the problem? Since it was clicking at the solenoid I figured that was probably it but if I really knew I wouldn't be asking here would I?

if fuses aint popped, then thats a good sign. Jump the relay, if starter turns, then inspect the cable/grounds b4 replacing the solenoid...
